About Phi Phi Don

Including tips for the best time to visit Phi Phi Don

One of the most beautiful archipelagos in the world, the six islands of Thailand’s Ko Phi Phi are an undeniable picture of paradise. Beach-fronted jungles coat towering limestone cliffs, surrounded by crystal-clear waters and coral reefs. The two main islands of Phi Phi Don and Phi Phi Leh are where most tourists head, with the surrounding islands of Bida Nok, Bida Nai, and Bamboo Island offering more pristine beaches and snorkelling spots.

Most beaches across the islands are ideal for swimming, snorkelling and diving amongst colourful coral and exotic fish. On Phi Phi Don, the powdery sands of Monkey Beach attract visitors keen to spot the native primates that give the beach its name. If you’ve seen ‘The Beach’ starring Leonardo DiCaprio, you’ll be familiar with the beautiful spot of Maya Bay on Phi Phi Leh that served as the film’s location. After being closed to the public for four years due to overtourism, the stunning sheltered bay is accessible once again by chartered boats from Phi Phi Don. Other highlights on Phi Phi Leh include Sama Bay, Pi Leh Bay and Viking Cave.

While the islands’ beaches and bays are the main draws for tourists, there are many other attractions which shouldn’t be missed. A hike up to the Phi Phi Viewpoint is well worth your time, offering a wonderful view over the island’s distinctive sandbar flanked by piercing turquoise waters on either side. Other activities include rock climbing, Thai cooking classes and cliff jumping.

Koh Phi Phi is a bustling little island packed with all sorts of holiday makers from the backpacking community through to high end hotel guests. There are characterful little lanes filled with food vendors, restaurants and other shops and stalls and in the evening the bars and evening activities kick into action and carry on until the small hours. There are beautiful beaches and also endless possibilities of boat travel round the island and other close bye sights. Very busy, very lively and very beautiful.

Phi Phi Island is one of the most beautiful places I have ever visited. Island hopping on a long tail boat and snorkeling at Maya Bay was an amazing experience. I would visit Phi Phi Island again if I could.

Absolute paradise.

11 April 2024

Absolute paradise. Lives up to the hype. The water is turquoise and crystal clear. Get out on a day boat trip, see bamboo island and you’ll never want to leave. And while you’re here, eat at the “Thai Duck Restaurant”. I went back and ate there 4 times while on the island. Get the duck soup!

Really beautiful island with some amazing viewpoints.

Really beautiful island with some amazing viewpoints. Great for people who want to party as there is lots of lively bars. If you are looking to relax I wouldn’t recommend as most of the activities include alcohol. The island overall is very walkable and there is some great food spots.

Beautiful island, beaches and waters.

2 April 2024

Beautiful island, beaches and waters. Expensive . Enjoyed walking into town from my hotel. It’s a difficult walk up and down hills. A lot of rubbish around. Snorkelling was fab. Don’t a tour, get it from the beach yourself. Tattoos food and drink expensive in town. Cosmic restaurant just ok.
