Paihia is located on the western coast of New Zealand’s North Island, and a place where you’ll find history in spades. Known as the 'Birthplace of the Nation', the Waitangi Treaty Grounds is where the historic agreement was signed between the indigenous Māori people and the British Crown, leading to New Zealand’s independence. Today, you can visit the site and discover the country’s history and Māori culture through interactive museums, cultural performances, a traditional carving studio and the world’s largest ceremonial canoe.
The horseshoe-shaped Haruru Falls span the Waitangi River and are located about five kilometres from Paihia. You can drive to the scenic spot, or if you’re feeling adventurous, you can kayak right up to the falls or hike along a walkway through mangrove forests. You can also opt for a picturesque walk through the Opua Forest, amidst native kauri trees and colourful birds, up to a lookout where you’ll be rewarded with superb views of the coast and the islands.
Fondly called the ‘Jewel of the Bay of Islands’, Paihia offers easy access to the 144 islands of the natural harbour. Here, you can go snorkelling, scuba diving or swimming with dolphins to explore marine life underwater. If you’d rather stay dry, the golden sands of Paihia Beach are a great spot to soak up the sunshine. You can also go on a cruise through the spectacular Hole in the Rock formation and take in panoramic views of the sea.

I'm a regular visitor to Paihia.

I'm a regular visitor to Paihia. I love the atmosphere - small town, but friendly and charming with lots of history. There's a good range of restaurants, bars and cafés to suit all budgets. Heaps of activities, mostly involving the beach and islands, but also some great land based things to explore. The town is small enough to walk everywhere, and there's plenty of accommodation right in town or in walking distance, plus there are ferry adventures and trips around the area, so there's so much to do even without needing to drive around. The trip on the ferry over to Russell is a must.

Such a lovely relaxing little town with very helpful and friendly people. Loved the Ferry departures being so frequent and enjoyed a trip to Russell. We enjoyed a couple of yummy meals. Fish & chips at the Paihia Fish & Chips and an amazing lamb shank on mash at the Crafty Local. Wish we had another day to enjoy Paihia.

Paihia - if you're not going on the cruises and tours - doesn't have a lot to offer visitors. And, to top it off, most of the shops were shut. We stayed 2 nights. One night would have been plenty of time to see everything.

It is a great place to visit, the hole in the rock tour is a great way to spend a day, we ate at the Tipsy Oyster and the oysters were divine the rest of the food was ho-hum, the staff were very attentive though, also ate from a local chippy shop and that was great, everything was within walking distance
I would not recommend Paihia Resort Hotel.

I would not recommend Paihia Resort Hotel.Greeted by a friendly staff member. After seeing my room ,and viewing the area and pool we were very disappointed. My children were most disappointed as the pool was dirty. The shower and bathroom wasn’t cleaned very well. Our room had a bad damp odour. The pool was not cleaned. The best thing about the room was the free wifi. The photos in Booking.com and the reviews were misleading.Very disappointing. My family and I travelled along way just to be so disappointed.Mostly as we expected what we saw in Booking.com. The staff were very nice.
