Packed with historical flavour, Galle is a vibrant city on the southwestern coast of Sri Lanka. Here you can explore prominent landmarks constructed by the Dutch, visit museums highlighting the colourful past of the region or sunbathe, surf and dine by the ocean at picturesque beaches like Unawatuna and Koggala.
Galle Fort is unarguably one of the most popular attractions of the city. This fortified old town area – a UNESCO World Heritage Site – is home to traditional Dutch and Portuguese homes, some of which are now cafés, boutiques and shops selling arts and antiques. Within the stone walls of this 16th-century fort, you’ll find streets bustling with shopping and dining options. Historical monuments are also dotted across town, with the Dutch Church Galle or Dutch Reformed Church, a famous landmark. Stained glass windows, an intricately designed pulpit and a floor lined with the gravestones of former Dutch citizens are the highlights of this church. A visit to the Galle Lighthouse is also recommended, for superb sunrise and sunset views over the ocean.
For a peek into the seafaring traditions of the city, the National Maritime Museum is a good starting point. It displays marine archaeological exhibits, ship models and other artefacts in an old Dutch warehouse. Just a short stroll away is the Historical Mansion Museum showcasing an assortment of items like pottery, sea shells and more in a traditional home. National Museum Galle is a delightful place to visit too and learn about the region's cultural heritage.

This is the best place in Sri Lanka if you just want a relaxing and/or indulgent holiday. So many things to do. Perfect for a honeymoon or honeymoon-like experience. There's a touch of culture/history. Use as a base if you want more adventure. I did a Lanka cooking course :-)

Enjoyed the Fort and the Tea Plantation visit, but didn't have enough time to explore further. A lot of tourists in this area, and a lot of shops catering specifically for them. Had some great food and experiences while there.

GALLE FORT is great for a one day visit.
11 May 2024
GALLE FORT is great for a one day visit. The town is small and some shops are repetitive, with the same items for sale, but there are a few unique shops and restaurants which make a visit worthwhile. Sunsets are beautiful; walk along the top of fort walls. Take a tuk tuk to the local fish market just outside of town for vibrant local life and walk back. We stayed overnight which made the visit more relaxing.
