About London

Including tips for the best time to visit London

London's rich history and mix of cultures have made it one of the most visited cities in the world. Its distinct boroughs are like small cities, each one offering something different from the last.

London's iconic skyline is an eclectic combination of instantly recognizable landmarks, from the historic Tower of London to ultra-modern skyscrapers like The Shard and 20 Fenchurch – more commonly known as "The Walkie-Talkie." Walking through the Square Mile immerses you into the original Roman settlement, with parts of the ancient defensive wall still visible. You'll also find some of the London's coziest (and oldest) pubs there, like Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese, frequented by Charles Dickens and Mark Twain.

For art lovers, head to the West End's world-class theaters, as well as the concert halls throughout Camden, Soho, and Shoreditch. You'll also find countless galleries and museums around the city, like the free British Museum, Natural History Museum, and the National Gallery.

Among all the impressive architecture and endless landmarks, it's easy to forget how green London is. The city consists of 47% public green space including 3,000 parks. The most popular are Hyde Park, Kensington Gardens, and Green Park, but it's worth venturing out to places like Richmond to walk alongside wild deer.

London is served by several major airports, including Heathrow, Gatwick, City, Stansted, Luton, and Southend. Travel is made easy by the extensive public transport connections, as well as private shuttle services.

It's a big fast paced city so if you are not used to that it can be a bit wearing. The historical attractions are it's draw but they are sadly being enveloped by large ugly sky scrapers. City views from high up are uninspiring. Still, we enjoyed our stay, our Thames cruise, touring the Tower, Tower Bridge, St. Paul's, Westminster, Kew Gardens and finding the oldest pubs in London.

Unless you live here, you will never have enough time for London! There's so much to experience. Go to Leicester Square for atmosphere, the Lego Shop and statues, but buy your souvenirs elsewhere, they're tack and over-priced in this area. For souvenirs just go in local shops, most have a range of items and they're better priced then the major tourist areas. Eat in Soho/China Town near the West End, great food for reasonable prices. For a cheap experience, walk the Thames, its so lovely, plenty of history and coffee shops along the way.

Very easy to get around and the people are very friendly and helpful. I thought London was very clean and has just about everything you need in every neighborhood you are in. I would pick a more updated hotel next time.

Too much to do and see.

May 3, 2024

Too much to do and see. I only ended up doing things on Central London, I had a list of restaurants and food street to visit, a list of museums, but there is so much to do that things just kept popping up and getting later on the list. As someone living in Lisbon I really needed the air of a big city, the British are very polite, so it is great.

The people were very friendly and provided directions without hesitation. I used the train everyday and it was quite easy to get to where you want to go! I was a solo traveler and from Earl's Court I was able to take the train to Windsor castle without delay.
