Renowned for its Portuguese architecture, fertile rainforests and proximity to the Costa Verde, the Brazilian city of Paraty is home to a tropical climate and UNESCO-listed Old Town. Initially founded in 1597 by Portuguese explorers, the indigenous Guaianás Indians gave the city its name – the ‘River of Fish’. Following the discovery of gold in the 17th century, thousands flocked to Paraty, with new exports like coffee and sugarcane helping the town's economy grow.
Situated in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Paraty’s fishing villages and colonial history provides a suitable location to learn about old-time Brazil. Similarly, Madriz Square in the Old Town is home to white-washed Portuguese-style architecture. Outside the city, the waterfalls and beaches of Praia do Cão Morto offer relaxation, while the Jabaquara Mangroves and the Saco do Mamanguá provide an authentic jungle experience. Top off your stay with an evening in a distillery drinking cachaça and chatting to locals.
Despite its size, Paraty boasts high-quality dining options with both Brazilian and international cuisine available. In the historical centre, you’ll find Banana da Terra serving Amazonian duck and a diverse cocktail list. Elsewhere, the Margarida Café offers a welcoming environment for brunch, lunch or dinner, with freshly caught shrimp moqueca and live music played all day. For nightlife, head to one of Paraty’s many beachfront bars or visit the Van Gogh Pub for traditional snacks and a taste of Brazilian pub culture.

Paraty is a magical place.
May 20, 2024
Paraty is a magical place. Worthwhile the trip. I visited the place in 2004 and now again after 20 years. Much has changed (many more shops and lots of boats), but the essence of the historical center and the magnificent bay did not. It will make you happy.
Paraty is a little bit of heaven.

Paraty is a little bit of heaven. I love the water, the beaches, the islands and the jungle. Hire a boat and explore! Every night the city is a block party with tables in the street and music spilling out of restaurants. Don't miss the historical museum.
It’s a must see for any visitor or even Brazilian.

It’s a must see for any visitor or even Brazilian. A beautiful town with a historic center. The city has various nice restaurants (but usually quite pricy) and shops. Since it’s not in the mountains, it’s easier to visit than for example ouro preto.
I think 1 or 2 nights is just right.
October 15, 2023
I think 1 or 2 nights is just right. It is nice to do a layover in Paraty because on the bus ride to and from (Rio/Sao Paulo) you can see quite a bit of the smaller towns and nature. If you did a bus direct from SP to Rio it would stick to the main highways and you wouldn't see as much. Worth a visit if you have time but keep in mind everything will be slightly more expensive as local tourists also like coming here. There are also lots of festivals so depending if you like festivals you could time your trip to coincide with one of them. During my stay there was a gastronomy festival which was pretty cool. They had cooking demonstrations and free samples of stuff.
Paraty is nothing more than a tourist trap and scam.
October 8, 2023
Paraty is nothing more than a tourist trap and scam. It is just 4 streets of colonial buildings with arrogant people. It is marketed extremely well as you believe that Paraty is a village of only colonial buildings however to our surprise they have added (obviously quite some time ago) more buildings and a bigger village the new town shall we call it. It is full of homeless people and danger the floor is disgusting and the people are intimidating. The supermarket is poorly built shed with insects everywhere and extremely overpriced. we left a day earlier than planned as we could not wait to escape the hell hole.
Paraty has a very smalll historical area.

Paraty has a very smalll historical area. Unless you want to take a boat trip you can view the area in a couple of hours. The beaches in Paraty itself are not very nice for swimming but outside there are beautiful beaches and areas.
