About Aparecida

Including tips for the best time to visit Aparecida

Located in Brazil’s state of São Paulo, Aparecida is renowned as an important site for Catholic pilgrims that come to visit the Basilica of the National Shrine of Our Lady of Aparecida – the largest cathedral in the world.

Aparecida’s religious architecture has made it an appealing destination for tourists and pilgrims alike. You can spend a full afternoon exploring the standout attraction of the Cathedral Basilica. Its chapel houses a terracotta statue of Our Lady of Aparecida, which is thought to have been crafted in the 17th century. The church's 100-metre-high tower has an observation deck where you can take in soaring views over the city. Another impressive church is the Basílica Histórica de Nossa Senhora Aparecida which dates back to 1745. Its baroque-style interior is illuminated by the light streaming through a beautiful blue stained glass window situated above the altar.

During your visit to Aparecida, it’s worth making time for the cable car ride between the Santuário Nacional terminal and Morro do Cruzeiro. You’ll be able to take in further views over the city and the surrounding mountains. Perhaps the most significant viewpoint is the Santa Nossa Senhora Aparecida, where you’ll find a huge statue of Brazil’s patron saint overlooking the town below.

The "Cidade dos Romeiros" has a good offer of cafés and restaurants, but they tend to be crowded in the evening. Get there earlier for dinner to avoid queues. The Pizzeria there (Tutti santi) has a good range of italian food. The staff, though friendly, tend to be slow during peak times and waiting for being served afetr being sat can be a nuisance. The vantage point on the other side of the highway (acessible through ski-like cable cars) is a must, especially to see the sunset above the sanctuary and river.
