You will not find another place like SOY with a comparable level of hospitality. Other than the complimentary shuttle to and from the train station, Tai and his family went out of their way to make sure our stay was comfortable and we were well-taken care of. SOY was a quaint and charming guesthouse, with great views (especially in winter), and a ton of space for a large family - which we were. The entire place was very well furnished, and had amenities that were great for hanging out - like a movie room. Food at SOY is prepared with a lot of love and attention to detail, super tasty, and amazing. Tai would even help us call tour operators and restaurants to help us make reservations because some places only take reservations over phone and speak only Japanese.

Reopened after renovation in 2022, Auberge Hidanomori is situated in quiet hills, a 10-minute shuttle ride from JR Takayama Station. The property offers free WiFi access in rooms and in public areas including the shared TV lounge and the terrace. We absolutely loved the location, the facilities, our room, the bath, and the breakfast was the best we had in our entire trip in Japan.

JR Takayama Train Station is a 20-minute walk away and a free shuttle service is provided from the station. It was an amazing experience in Takayama ! It felt like home and the meals were delicious ! No Takayama experience would ever be as authentic and traditional as this. I initially thought that it is a small inn but I was surprised by how huge the inn is and also the family who owns Oyado Yamakyu were very warm and they made sure we were comfortable. Grateful for the late night pick-up at the station too and for keeping us safe. It was wonderful ! We also experienced a modern hotel in Takayama during this trip but Oyado Yamakyu is the experience I remember most !

Located in the historical town of Magome, Tajimaya features Japanese-style accommodations in a 110-year old building. Each room features a flat-screen TV, and guests can relax in the public bath. The property lies in front of a traditional stone-paved street, and is a 5-minute walk from the Magome Bus Stop. Free Wi-Fi is available in the public areas. Amazing property, and super cute. The food is absolutely spectacular. Tasty, well displayed and very large portions. Having the private usage of the bath was also great, especially after hiking there from Tsumago. It is honestly like living in a Japanese fairytale or myth. Our family truly loved this place, and the entire experience was the highlight of the trip. Oh, we also got a room with a private toilet, I think the only one in the property, so that was a win! If you see this place as available, book it. Staff are kind, helpful, and super nice. And there was a beautiful welcome song at dinner.

Food was excellent and facilities were great. The private onsens was the main reason we decided to stay here. They had a small, medium and large private onsens on top of the public baths that were available. Very easy to access and the perfect getaway for myself and the wifey!

Minshuku Takizawa is situated a 70-minute drive from Takayama City. Free private parking is available on site.

Okuhida Toy Museum is a 1-minute walk away while Shinhotaka Ropeway can be reached with a 10-minute drive. JR Matsumoto Station is a 90-minute drive away. Breakfast was very elaborate. The location is easy to find by car.
