England Through The Ages
Although abounding in reminders of the past, York is very much a city for the here and now, with excellent shops, bars and restaurants, many along the River Ouse. Surrounding it are the medieval city walls – the longest and best preserved in England – and many of the gates that once allowed access to the city.
Walk the walls for wonderful views towards the city and towering York Minster. Standing proud on a hill, this cavernous church is the seat of the Archbishop of York, the 2nd highest position in the Church of England.
A little south is The Shambles, a narrow street with medieval buildings that now house quaint shops. Going further back in time is the Jorvik Centre, a fascinating museum showcasing the city’s Viking remains. You can even have a go at archaeology yourself at the DIG excavation pits, with replica finds from York’s Roman, Viking, medieval and Victorian eras.
Other York attractions include the National Railway Museum, home to the Flying Scotsman and Mallard trains. Around 30 minutes’ drive away is Castle Howard, a stately home with over 1000 acres of grounds.
Leeds-Bradford Airport is the nearest airport, and there is a great range of hotels, B&Bs and guest houses in York and the outskirts available on Booking.com.
We really enjoyed York. Everything seemed like walking distance so managed to see everything we had an interest in.
Steeped in history and culture there is something for everyone here from those interested in architecture to foodies.
I would recommend York Minster, the Shambles (and food market - so many great choices), walking the wall (that surrounds the city) and Betty's Team Rooms.

One of the UK's most historic and accessible cities.
One of the UK's most historic and accessible cities. Everything you would find in London but cheaper and more 'human sized'. In Spring it is just busy enough to have a buzz but not crazy. Fabulous architecture, a river in the city, outstanding hotels and restaurants and jolly street theatre. A must see.
Stayed in Galtres Lodge - superb and more or less next door to Minster. Ate in hotel, Lucias and the famous Yak and Yeti. All brilliant.
A walkable city and easy to reach by train from anywhere in UK but importantly is on the main East Coast line between Kings Cross and Aberdeen. A good stop off if you are covering England and Scotland.

Really walkable city. Everything is within an easy walk.
Really walkable city. Everything is within an easy walk. There are lovely longer walks along the river. The main attractions were very busy on the weekend even with booked tickets. But you don’t really need to pay. You can just walk around. The minster and city walls are wonderful.
Marks and Spenser food is good if you are in self catering. Restaurants are expensive because of the tourists ie us.

The history of the city is accessible through good signage.
The history of the city is accessible through good signage. The city streets are not very clean and there are too many beggars and vagrants hanging around to hastle people in the streets. Too many shops were selling cheap imported tat. One major irritation was that the Tourist information centre in the city centre was closed from 2.00pm, for "staff training" on the Friday afternoon when we were visiting, which impacted in a negative way on our trip,

The hotel was in a great position to see all that York had...
The hotel was in a great position to see all that York had to offer. There is so much to see and do that I wish I’d booked for longer. Some places were far too expensive but more reasonable venues could be found.
I’d recommend York to anyone. There is plenty to see without any cost
Extremely modern, comfortable, clean hotel, slap bang in the heart of York city centre. A Tesco Express is a very short walk from the hotel, which is very handy for snacks or drinks for the room, but the hotel does have these available if needs be. The room itself was so clean, and looked newly renovated. It included a mini fridge which was unexpected but a lovely touch. I slept so well on the bed, and the complimentary breakfast buffet in the morning was so impressive. They even had a waffle making station! Wow. I’ll be back.
The hotel was lovely we went for my daughters hen party there was 14 of us. The hotel was situated in a lovely area of York a short taxi ride into the city centre. The pub next door the grey mare was very helpful with taxi numbers and where to go while we were staying there. Only 1 complaint there wasn’t enough bedding the sofa bed didn’t have a duvet and when one of the girls rang they said they couldn’t bring one until the office opened on Monday and we we’re checking out on the Sunday.
Locality great. Excellent base for the city centre. Short walking distance to the Shambles. Situated on a street full of bars, cafes and restaurants.
Easy check in, simple instructions for gate and room codes.
Friendly staff.
On site parking. Warned about the narrow entrance for cars but we had no problem.
Room Comfortable and clean. Aware of negative reviews but we weren't expecting the Ritz as it was considerably cheaper than other York hotels.
We would definitely stay again.
This is a complex of restored historic buildings. They have 42 rooms in different buildings. I had booked the lowest priced room and asked for a quiet room. When I arrived the staff said they had upgraded my room (for free) to give me a quiet room. That was nice. I loved the bathtub and the bed was comfortable. The hotel was just over the river from the historic part of York, maybe a 15 minute walk.
Not a hotel as much as an airbnb type place but that was totally fine. Accessed my room key by a lockbox on the entry door, super easy. Awesome location just a stones throw from one of the city’s famous gates, leading to a pedestrian street bringing you straight to the Minster. My room was small but cozy and exactly what I wanted for a couple days in York. Lots of restaurants everywhere.
Room: Received an upgrade! Comfortable, clean and not noisy,
Location: Beside the Clifford Tower. Easy walking distance to most of the York attractions.
Breakfast: Full selection available including, full English, cold meats and cheese, scones, muffins etc.
Parking: Valet parking is available on site. There is also a Pay and Display public site opposite the hotel.
This was a wonderful Bed & Breakfast! I can't say enough good things about it. Our room was lovely and very spacious and everyone on the premises was inviting and so pleasant. Their breakfast was top notch and the location was perfect for exploring all parts of York. I would highly recommend them and hope to be able to return to England someday and book another stay!
Excellent hotel for a 3-night stay in York. The hotel is within walking distance from the city centre. It is located by the river with lovely views. The room was a good size with comfortable beds. We were a family of 2 adults, one teenager and a dog, and had ample space. Staff were friendly. Overall we really enjoyed our stay.
The location is excellent for the city centre & attractions such as York Minster. No need to worry about transport to get around. Hotel staff very welcoming. Plenty of choice for breakfast. Food, including that served in the restaurant excellent. Great break away & the sun shone too.
It's a great location for visiting York which we knew as we have stayed there before. The room was a good size and resonably comfortable. We were at the back of the hotel overlooking the car park, so at least it was quiet. The staff were very helpful, we didn't try the breakfast.
The hotel is conveniently located on a reasonably quiet street in City Centre. It's easy to find, and it serves as a great launch place for a walking adventure in York. The rooms are small but comfortable, as are the bathrooms, which have great walk-in showers.
The staff was very friendly and helpful. The hotel was clean the rooms were clean too.
Very good breakfast!
The hotel is perfectly located as it is close to the train station and very close to the city centre with most of York’s attractions!
Stayed the first time because they sponsored my sons Rugby team. Have stayed in two other York hotels but I just love the friendliness and ambiance of the Moxy and its convenience to the Minster and city centre. All the Staff are delightful.
It was a beautiful hotel, the room finish was immaculate and was very cosy. The location was also great to walk through the gardens to reach the centre of York. Would definitely stay here again!
This may have been the cutest hotel room I’ve ever stayed in! Large room with four poster bed. Perfect location across from York Minster. Bed was comfy. Bathroom was spotlessly clean and modern.
all the staff were very friendly.
The room was very clean and a comfortable bed.
Breakfast and other meals were freshly cooked.
Hotel location is great - close to York town center.
Great location for travel to York. The hotel has generally been refurbished well. My room was small but well-laid out. The very busy and over-worked staff were polite and charming
City Centre close to hotel.valet parking beneath hotel is a little cheaper than the carpark opposite. Parking is a problem in York.
Had a room overlooking Clifford's Tower.
One of the best hotels in York.
Specially its location stay there and no need for transportation walk and enjoy York city 👍
