Senjukaku 4 stars

Shibu Onsen, Yamanouchi

Boasting open-air hot spring baths, a heated indoor pool and beautiful Japanese gardens, Senjukaku offers traditional Japanese-style accommodation that has a historic charm. Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park is a 15-minute drive away. I loved everything about this place. The location (walking distance to snow monkey park and to shibu onsen), the food, the rooms, the onsen was wonderful. It's a bit dated, but super well maintained. I actually liked the old school charm and luxury.

Yudanaka Onsen Yamazakiya 3 stars

Shibu Onsen, Yamanouchi

The air-conditioned rooms feature tatami (woven-straw) floors and Japanese futon bedding. Each room comes with a TV, a fridge and an electric kettle with green tea bags. Japanese Yukata robes are provided and guests can enjoy views of the river or of the traditional stone-paved streets. Bathrooms and toilets are shared. Very warm, attentive and helpful owner. Room and meal were set and prepared with excellence. The stay is very convenient because Akira san can fetch you from the train station and drive you to Snow Monkey Park, just arrange ahead with him. He even made sure that I know my way back to Nagano before we parted ways. Onsen is booking system, so it's private. Also impressed by his responsiveness over booking.com messaging platform.

Yudanaka Tawaraya Ryokan 4 stars

Yudanaka Onsen, Yamanouchi

A 5-minute walk from Yudanaka Train Station, Tawaraya offers Japanese-style accommodations with free Wi-Fi and a flat-screen TV. Guests can relax in the indoor and outdoor hot-spring baths and wear colorful Japanese Yukata robes. Massages can be requested for an extra cost.

Tawaraya Ryokan is a 10-minute drive from Snow Monkey Park and a 15-minute walk from Heiwa Kannon. Shiga Kogen Ski Resort is a 30-minute drive away. The service as this Ryokan was 10/10, and was the most authentic one we stayed in during our 4 weeks in Japan. The staff were so lovely, and spoke great English. They showed us to our room, and gave us essentially a "room tour" whilst we drank complimentary tea. They gave us a map with nearby restaurants and ammenties noted on it. The private outdoor onsen was SO nice! You book a slot upon arrival, which you can access in the evening with 30 min slots. The onsen was large and the perfect contrast with the fresh cool air in the evening. Yukatas were provided for us as an option to wear around the hotel - both my partner and I are bigger than the average Japanese person (Wife is plus size, I am 6ft 2) and we both comfortably fit into the ones picked out for us. The only thing that threw us was that during breakfast, they cleared the beds from our room - had we known people would go in, we'd probably have neatened the room a bit haha! P.S don't skip the sushi restaurant a few doors down from the hotel. The sushi was EXQUISITE and they even have a phonetic Japanese to English page at the front so you can have a go at ordering properly with the chef.

Shibu Onsen, Yamanouchi

At Daymaruya Ryokan, guests can enjoy hot-spring baths and traditional Japanese-style accommodations with free wired internet access. A free shuttle is available from Yudanaka Train Station, which is a 5-minute drive away. Our host went above and beyond to accommodate us and our limited itinerary. He offered to take care of our luggages and drove us straight to the snow monkey park entrance. He even recommended great spots for sake tasting, drinks and snacks. He went and fetched us after park hours went we still weren't back, we didn't even have to ask. Unfortunately, we missed him as we didn't received his messages so give him you number or always check your messages. They lent us yukatas which we used while we leisurely stroll the nice onsen village.

Yudanaka Yasuragi 3 stars

Yudanaka Onsen, Yamanouchi

Yasuragi Inn’s Japanese-style rooms have tatami (woven-straw) floors, futon beds and a flat-screen TV. Each room is air-conditioned. A fridge, an electric kettle and yukata robes are provided. All guests have access to the on-site hot spring public baths, and they can be reserved for private use. (please inquire at the front desk for more information.) The hosts were really kind and helpful in every respect picking up or dropping off at the station. The breakfast and evening meal were delicious examples of traditional Japanese food. The two onsens were the best we have used in Japan especially after a really cold day outside on the mountain. The beds were really comfy and cosy even in cold weather. Loved all the other little touches.
