Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta, Iceland, Australia, Greece, Brazil and North Carolina. For properties in these regions, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United StatesThere could be fans in the rooms to help with the hot nights. That would have been nice.
Very personal service, met me at the front gates. Amazing location, very low key. Get ready to rough it a little, but that’s all part of the experience - get ready for a ride!

ItalyThe vibe you find at Open Gate Hostel is hard to explain and find somewhere else. Staying here was one of the best decisions I have made throughout my two weeks in Hawaii. Staff is truly super (helpful, friendly, welcoming, helpful) and the people you meet there are just amazing. My private room was large, comfortable, and clean. Bathrooms and kitchen were very clean, too. Location is incredible.

GermanyIt's a dead-end location with no restaurants, shops, beach, whatsoever. 30-40 minutes drive to Hilo, >60 min. to the Volcanoes park entrance. In the future, an inhouse bar would be great!
Very special place and probably the best value-for-money on Big Island.

CanadaI really loved this hostel. The staff were so friendly and went out of their way to make sure the guests had a nice experience. The hostel itself is a very unique structure built on lava fields. Definitely one of the most interesting hostels I’ve ever stayed at.

ChileThe temperature of the water of the shower was rather cold, for me that’s fine, but it might be uncomfortable for some people.
The location is great in the middle of the old lava. Plus there is a gym and the people at the hostel were kind and friendly.

United StatesI liked everything, I only recommend that a car is necessary because it is a bit far from the main road.
The atmosphere that is breathed is one of complete relaxation, ideal to rest and disconnect from everything, the staff is very attentive and helps with everything you need.

PortugalHelpful staf that picked and dropped me in Pahoa. Pretty good wifi. I had to make a video call (which I usually don't do and hate) and it worked fine. Room was comfortable. The road is in bad condition but regular cars can definitely make it. Clean. Very remote. Again, I liked it, but maybe not for everyone.

IndiaThe structure is made of wood and shakes anytime anyone walks on it. There were people watching tv until late and the noise flew into our room, so it depends on your luck what you get. There is little to no food in common stock at the hostel (which generally is), we had to go out late in a very dark area to get some basics.
The location is actually on top of a volcano. It's unlike any other place you have lived at.

Unique and absolutely amazing location. It would be hard to imagine another hostel built on lava. You definitely need a car though otherwise you will be stuck and bring all your food too!

United Statesthe driving directions on map take you a little behind on the actual hotel and unless you really know the roads out there it will be hard to find and almost impossible to find at night. Also the potholes are especially bad right now on the road and you need to take special care
loved the energy and feel of the place. you need to understand about Kalapana and the lava flow to really appreciate this place. it was suuuuper clean, well organized, very comfortable rooms, very fast WiFi and the best cell service in the neighborhood. Also had exceptional espresso, which is unheard of in Puna.
