Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

GermanyThere is no balcony and the windows open to the alleys. The third bed is located above the dining room, without a door or privacy, and its ceiling is very low (even for a small person such as myself)
This is a beautiful and very spacey house, with everything you need in the kitchen, a dining table, a living room with another dining table, two bathrooms and another (third) toilets, and laundry facilities. The location is wonderful inside the old town.

GermanyWe were welcomed by Joao, a great host, who provided breakfast and helpful information for us. For example, he had books for us about birds and other wildlife when he found out that we are nature enthusiasts and he gave us hiking maps as well. The Guest House is fabulous and equipped with everything one can wish. Great restored house with lots of charme in the old town of Mertola! We loved our stay!

CanadaThe bed could use a topper to make it a little more comfortable. We found it a bit too firm.
First of all, we were not expecting breakfast but Ana had left some cheeses, parma ham, juice, jams from the area, coffee, teas, milk and fresh bread!! Delicious and much appreciated. The Villa is very comfortable with a wonderfully inviting room for relaxing, watching TV or reading !! As well; a complete kitchen, dining room 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. We had been traveling for a month and needed a place to "rest up" before heading on. Spent 4 days and were content to "just hang out". It felt like home.

CanadaDifficult driving in narrow streets.
We were surprised to be given breakfast foods included in the price and we were very appreciative. The apartment was located on a quiet street and easily accessible to groceries, café, and restaurants. Ana met us with the keys and showed us around the apartment. We really liked this apartment and found the rooms spacious. Free parking was a short walk away. The apartment was very well equipped and the only thing missing were measuring cups and spoons. Would highly recommend this apartment.

PortugalThe place is not easily accessible by car. You can take your car all the way up to the door to unload your bags, but you will very likely have to go back on reverse (it's a dead-end street), with only a few cm (really) between your car, the house walls and the neighbors' cars. Far from a trivial thing, unless you have a very small car. As an easier alternative, you can leave your car close to the town hall building (much easier parking) and walk a couple of minutes to the house.
Ana and João were very kind hosts. One can see the care and taste they put into Vila Velha Guest House. The Owl theme throughout the house is a really good touch. The house is very spacious, clean and fully equipped. There is a pleasant dining room adjacent to the kitchen, a nice living room downstairs, and the sleeping room and bathroom facilities are good.

PortugalThe hospitality of João and Ana, as well as their attention to detail as regards the organization of space, equipment, cleaniness, and communication, exceeded all of our expectations. The place is beautifully located, quiet and pristine clean. The division of space is very thoughtful, which makes it a perfect holiday base for two families, offering both privacy and generous areas for sharing a meal or playing a round of boardgames. All the divisions are extremely well equipped, making it obvious that the hosts thought not just about the basic necessities but the actual comfort of their guests. The very same quality was reflected in the communication - since the moment of making the reservation up to that of leaving the flat we always felt accompanied and very well taken care of. Whether it was about recommendations for walking trails and kayaking, or finding a good parking spot and moving our luggage around, there was a good solution for everything, which made our stay truly enjoyable and peaceful. Thank you once again and all the best for the future, as your work is really exceptional!

PortugalHotel: As a part of historic heritage, the apartment has many steps. Stairs leading to the lower level are steep. Bathroom (level 0): the shower cabin has a plastic curtain (I hate such arrangement). There is also a high step between the bedroom and the bathroom. Anyway not enough to move to the bedroom downstairs where the bathroom has a glass cabin and no step. Car access and parking 1. The hotel has no car access. At the old town the car traffic is restricted to residents only. It’s a price you pay for stay in the heart of historic part of the town. 2. Do not try to approach the hotel by car following GPS instructions. You will end-up like a cork in the bottleneck. The urbanistic layout of the old town was designed in times when an idea of heavy transport was related to a cart carried by a donkey. 3. The easy solution is to park near the multifunctional hall (pavilhão multiusos) and to carry your bags about 700m. The parking is located at N122 / IC27 (follow the signs to Algarve), is large, horizontal, easy to find, and is free. That’s what we did. 4. If you really need to approach the hotel closer to unload/load your bags and test your acrobatic skills, set your GPS to the Town Hall (Camara municipal, Praça Camões). Break the ban of the car traffic at the entrance to the old town, keep left, follow the city walls (with awesome view). There is a small parking at the Town Hall (4 places, paid from 9am to 7pm, 0.50€/h). It’s about 100m from the hotel (including 10m vertically). 5. There are some possibilities to park free in the old town – you will be advised by the host.
Location: Excellent, in the heart of a historic town remembering the times of the Order of Santiago, Moors and Romans inside the town walls. A good base to visit Guadiana Natural Park. Hotel: An old house converted into a modern apartment. The apartment has three levels. At level 0 (ground floor counting from the entrance) there are a fully equipped kitchen, WC, a dining room, a bedroom, and a bathroom attached to the bedroom. There are two open mezzanines over the dining room (an additional bedroom) and over the bedroom (storage space). Downstairs there are large living room with a rocking chair, a bedroom and a bathroom (all with windows). The kitchen is equipped with an extensive range of appliances: microwave oven, ceramic oven, kettle, fridge, freezer, dishwasher, washing machine, dryer. And you will find also everything you need to prepare and serve the meals and clean thereafter. Room: (bedroom level 0): enough space, additional lining and towels provided (much more than we needed), electric sockets easily accessible including near the bed, enough lighting. Good lighting for reading provided in the dining and living room where you find comfortable tables. Bed: large and comfortable. Bathroom (level 0): small but functional, enough space for your own toiletries. Nice smell of the soap and shampoo. The second bathroom at the lower level is a little bit larger, also very functional. Breakfast: according to the description there is no meal provided. In fact the breakfast is not served but you are provided with a full fridge of food: locally produced jam, butter, meat, cheese, milk, juice as well as a good bread, tea and a coffee cap for the first breakfast (if you like coffee, you must buy Delta caps for the coffee machine). All included in the price. WiFi: works everywhere, in the dining and living room the signal is strong and the connection is fast. Covid: the host used a mask when stayed with us, the disinfection gel is provided.

United KingdomThe parking was a challenge but that's not a reflection on the house which is lovely.
Vila Velha Guest House is very comfortable and there was a generous stock left in the fridge for lunch and breakfast which was much appreciated. Joao's mother met us to show us around. The beds were comfortable and the shower good as well. The kitchen is well equipped for self catering and overall the house is really spacious (especially for just two people!). Mértola is an interesting town and the house is well located to visit everywhere. Joao was on hand via phone for our entire visit with recommendations of places to eat and park - very helpful. We ate at Restaurant Tamuje twice during our visit with a great meal on each evening - ask for one of the outside tables - it's like private dining with a view over the river. The only challenge was the parking, as it is such an old town the roads were not built for large hire cars! On advice, we initially parked in R. Elias Garcia (about 4 minutes walk from the house) although this is very steep and cobbled - the clutch was definitely feeling it. We discovered later that it was far easier to park in Praça Luis de Camōes (and free as the ticket machine had broken during our visit!). The drive to collect our luggage on departure was tight but doable and we temporarily parked at the end of Rua 5 de Outubro. Thank you Joao & Ana.
