The included five course dinner was wonderful. The continental breakfast however was unremarkable.

The water pressure in the shower is the best we had in the entire South Island. Locally sourced toiletries were also a pleasure. Staff at Te Waonui also amongst the best in hospitality.

Price will scare away some, but as a one-time experience it's a highlight of travel to New Zealand's South Island.

Built in a tropical forest, each room and restaurant seem like a tree house among the foliage. A fixed plate gourmet dinner (included in price) is beautifully presented and delightfully delicious. All staff are courteous, service-oriented, and top professionals.

Unfortunately the bed was very uncomfortable, the mattress topper was lumpy and bunch in a big mountain down the middle of the bed

Pillows were a little uncomfortable . And alot of dead fern outside our room. Dinner was amazing but we asked to be on the outside and were denied, yet a lady came out and sat out there and had dinner

Water and chocolate given at end of night was i lovely touch.And massage was amazing. And the man that was on when we checked in was fantastic and so professional and kind.

This isn’t a five star hotel. It tries to be but it is dated and the food in the restaurant is really bad - well presented but the salmon was overcooked, the cheese wasn’t great quality and I’ve never seen my husband pull a face at pate but… ! It also isn’t made clear that you can eat at The Landing, King Tiger or Snake Bite. It was only when I asked if we could switch to room only rate that it was offered. The hotel needs a spruce up internally.

The location is amazing! The spa is sensational!!! Truly do prebook a massage as it was incredible! The staff are helpful and nice to deal with. Some of the junior members require more training as they weren’t aware of processes etc

The 5 course menu is extremely average and amongst the poorest quality food we ate in New Zealand after travelling for 4 weeks! Get a new chef and a new format for dinner!

It was not kept clean in public spaces. The public restrooms in the foyer area were not cleaned regularly. No hand towels for 24 hours at one stage. The lounge area wasn’t cleaned with dirty tea and coffee making facilities, urns unplugged and tables sticky. This was every day. Also when we arrived we were offered dining times that clashed with prebooked tours. Id imagine if they were so strict they’d have sent us a note to rebook dining times.

Minor miss step on arrival during check in new guy couldn’t multi task but Tama sorted it out The tomato soup - not a good fit with the rest of the menu The machine coffee in lieu of a barrister made morning coffee

Restaurant is far bow par for a 5* hotel. Didn't eat as bad in weeks. Breakfast is so-so and coffee is freezedried! 3rd day we asked for cappuccino because it was very quiet and they do have it, but busses full of (old) people make it more of a place to.avoid

The dinner and breakfast that was included the room price were not as good as I expected for the cost. For a five star resort I expected more, although the meat on the first night was nicely cooked.

The word Retreat does not apply here. Retreat is the first thing you should do. Not a Retreat but a glorified tour bus stop. Dinner was like being in a cafeteria with 100 people. The noise was atrocious. Breakfast was the same cafeteria style. The dinner was cafeteria level nothing culinary about it. The staff gave me a hard time about asking for another bottle of water and chocolate. Not tranquil, peaceful or relaxing. Not a good value for the money. Look elsewhere.

General hotel areas very dated, spa closed because they have no spa staff, dinner Ok without being exceptional and even though the restaurant had only four tables occupied we waited between 20 to 30 minutes between courses, breakfast very disappointing. Overall very underwhelmed by the hotel particularly as I didn’t have an option to book anything other than dinner, bed and breakfast. The hotel is overpriced.
