Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United StatesI don't think this hotel is very used to foreigners. The concierge spoke English and was fantastically professional, but did seem like he would have preferred Japanese customers, even going as far as telling us that "there isn't much to do around here", as he pointed us towards the ropeway station on a map we got from the hotel that promotes tourism.
This place was top notch! The ryoken was beautiful, up in the mountains of the Hakone area! What a view. The dinner was served in the room, and fantastic and seasonal and fresh. Breakfast was just as amazing, again in the room, and fresh and seasonal. The service and attention to guests was great. The onsen areas were also beautiful, although I think I would prefer that hot water in the late fall or winter. From here, we walked to the cable car station, and visited the beautiful caldera area, and caught a glimpse of Mt. Fuji in the background.

CanadaIt’s older and it shows. Probably could clean the onsen area more, but I guess you can only do so much unless it gets a proper renovation.
We got the main room in the pictures for our family and were quite happy about the space. It wasn’t obvious where to stock our things as the drawers stored the linens and yukata, but lots of room to pit it aside. The food spread was great ,but after a few days, we were happy to have other meals since the food is similar (fish done in many ways!) and we aren’t used to meals like these. The kids had lots of fun. Their baby chairs make funny (and annoying) noises, which of course they played with constantly. Loved using the onsen. Nice and relaxing. On one of our days, the ropeway was closed and it poured, which makes travelling a bit tricker even just to grab food. We were aware of the reviews and treated this place like an older rustic cabin-style place, and had a great time. We enjoyed the outdoor onsen the most, less humidity to bear.

It’s a little tired but authentic. Love the experience of traditional Ryokan. It’s so special when the staffs come and prepare a spread of dinner table in your tatami room and then after the dinner they turn the room into a bed room by bringing out Futon. The quality of Onsen water is fantastic. The staffs are very friendly and welcoming.

United StatesIn our initial request we asked if it was possible to have one of the meals not come with fish (we were fine with paying the same price but just not getting the fish part thus getting a smaller meal). We just didn't wish to waste food. Unfortunately we didn't get a response back, and only after posting the request and making the reservation we saw the no meal change policy. The bathroom in our room smelled heavily like sweat. It had clearly been cleaned but there was also dirt in the corners. The room and the rest of the hotel looked pretty clean however. The one other place that needed cleaning was the smaller onsen.
The staff was fantastic. We felt welcome and we truly enjoyed our stay. The room was very nice and necessary amenities were provided. They also offered to keep our suitcases a little longer while we visited Lake Ashi, which was very considerate. The meals were exceptional in both portions and quality of the food. There was a wide variety of foods in true kaiseki fashion and in no way did we ever feel like corners were cut. 10/10! The waiting staff was also very nice, and always very punctual. Just make sure you are ready 5 minutes early. The living room, entrance and lounge area were cleaned well, and we were provided new clean robes daily which was nice. The inside layout also gives studio Ghibli vibes which is amazing.

United StatesFacilities are worn. Lots of maintenance is needed. Don't even bother to reserve the private baths - they are terrible! The public baths are good enough
Dinners and breakfasts were very good. Service staff was exceptional and very courteous and responsive to our needs and requests. We didn't expect a pristine property. It is old and decaying, but has plenty of timeworn charm and character.

FranceThis hotel should have some renovation. The rooms, corridors and especially the Onsen are very old and out dated. We paid for the private Onsen room but it was not worth the additional fee. It is only a single bath tub in a small room. There is no ‘wow factor to it’. in summary, given the quality of the hotel, the price is unreasonable.
Traditional room for an authentic experience. The staff were all very accommodating and friendly. The dinner and breakfast meals were tasty. There is a free shuttle to and from Gora station (it is a steep walk without).

United StatesIf you're looking for what a traditional antique ryokan is, look no further. This place is definitely old, but with that age comes character. If you want a more modern stay you're going to need to look elsewhere. What it lacks because of age it makes up for in the incredibly friendly staff and delicious food. The woman who attended us for our meals was super nice and set everything up beautifully. She did not speak much English but sincerely made an effort to communicate with us. We didn't know what we were eating, but honestly didn't need to. It was all so delicious! My husband and I also took advantage of a private onsen. The bathroom itself was relatively small but that bath was GLORIOUS! After waking roughly 10 miles every day for half a week prior, it was so refreshing to soak. The water was hot and milky in color and left our skin feeling so smooth. This ryokan is also 2 or so minutes from the ropeway and end line of the cable car. If you get a chance, I highly recommend getting there by the Tozan train then cable car as the views are beautiful. I recommend this ryokan if an older building isn't off-putting, as I really do think that the rest of the experience far outweighs the age of the building and the fact that things clearly need repair in areas.

United StatesThe building is so old that the rooms and hotel smell horrible - it gave me a headache and I really couldn’t get over the smell during my stay. The staff didn’t really speak any English, so if you’re a traveler, it doesn’t make sense to go here as I didn’t understand what I should be doing, what my meals were, etc (even though they were perfectly friendly)! It’s just as expensive as any other ryokan in the area, so if you’re going to spend that much money, I imagine there are much better ryokans for that price. I didn’t find this experience worth the cost and unfortunately was eager to leave in the morning. They really need to do some renovations to the building and find a way to improve the smell in the rooms and baths, it made the building feel very dirty.
The location & hot spring baths were nice! Staff was very friendly as well.
