Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta, Iceland, Australia, Greece, Brazil and North Carolina. For properties in these regions, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

IsraelFar from most things to do in Hakone, only a few places nearby. A little pricey for what you get.
I liked the place itself, close to the rail station, I had a volunteer who spoke English and gave me great tips about the area!

The view over the mountains was great. Peaceful inside onsen's with garden views to book private time in. Lovely traditional Japanese rooms. Close to the Gondola station, and a quick walk to the convenience store. Steeeeeep streets!! Fridge and tea supplies in rooms.

VietnamThe room walls are thin, you can hear some knocking noises at night. The location is very tiring to walk to if you get there after all the cable car stations closed (it's higher than other accomodations I've seen). I recommend going here at the start of check in time.
When I got there they switch my room to a 10 beds dormitory because the Japanese room's AC is broken. I didn't like the dorm room so I ask them for that broken AC room. It is really cozy and nice, and I didn't mind the AC because the winds outside make up for it, especially in early morning it's amazing. Just beware of bugs flying inside, nothing harmful so far for me. Feels like I'm living in a countryside. The free reserved indoor bath is also really nice but a bit old.

BahrainOur stay at the Kinkaku hotel was so great, Tammy was incredible as a host it felt like we visited a relative, when we left she let us go through the kitchen closer to the station and she waited for us to reach it was very cute. She was also so nice to our kids. The Onsen was special and location was just the best!

JapanMany people have complained about the accessing the hotel - located on a mountain, the walk from Gora station can be difficult (with luggage). However, the cable car is very accessible during the day (until 5pm), and makes the journey far easier. In any case, it should be known in advance that the area is located on a mountain, so physical access may not be optimal. This, of course, should not be blamed on the host. The only real negatives in my opinion were the need to reserve the showers, which are located within the onsen space. Essentially, to book the showers is to book the onsen, and vice versa. Since the times are not super flexible, one should prepare their shower times in advance with the host - but she makes this process quite easy. Additionally, the provided amenities in the room were a bit limited (shower, toothbrushes, hairdryer), but other basics could likely be requested if necessary. Finally, I believe complaints about the host are generally unwarranted, as I found her to be helpful and accommodating. However, guests should ensure that they communicate clearly and fulfill their obligations (such as showing up on time for onsen reservations) as these spots are limited and require work from the host.
The private onsen was very comfortable, and easy to reserve with the host! She was quite accommodating and fairly knowledgeable about the area. She was also multilingual (English, Japanese, and more) and easy to reach using various messaging platforms. Beds were reasonably comfortable and the space (even the small room) was equipped with at least a table and chairs on the tatami floor. However, I would say that the onsen is the strongest point, so use it for the best stay!

GermanyThe onsen itself is in need of renovation. It does look run down and very old/used. That did spoil the mood a little bit. The location was not for me. The rope way is very close, but there is nothing else to do. Restaurants close at 8pm. And because I was alone, there was not much social life.
Wonderful staff, super helpful and extremely friendly. This was exceptional service! I even got the entire dormitory for myself and was upgraded to a queen size single bed. The onsen water was extremely relaxing. Every room gets 50min. per day. Meaning everyone in the dorm shares the 50min. timeslot. As I was alone, I got it all for myself.

CanadaLocation is close to at cable car station and the cable cars close around 6 so it is difficult to return to the place after 6, and most dinner restaurants are closer to Gora station.
Was told the room would be small, but was bigger than I expected. Very simple room with all you needed, only thing I would have wanted was a window. Staff were very friendly and helpful! Onsen was great and relaxing.

AustraliaThe onsen you could book was so hot that we couldn’t really get in it! Apparently that is the temperature of the water straight from the source. The location is a little out of the way so tricky to find somewhere for dinner at night as most public transport stops about 5pm.
We stayed three nights and were lucky to be upgraded to a large apartment with plenty of space for our family of four. Staff were kind and helpful.

AustraliaThe location is difficult, but as far as I've seen Hakone in general is like this. The cleanliness was fine, it was quite comfortable and overall the facilities were just ok.
The hospitality was so good, for me it's the main thing making the place so loveable. I felt welcomed there and as if the workers there consider me a friend.
