The owners are so friendly and put so much effort into making your stay a great one. Breakfast and dinner were both fabulous and the onsen as well. It’s also in a great location and you can walk everywhere. Highly recommend!

We liked everything

Sumiyoshi is a cultural experience as well as a place to stay! We loved staying in an older, more traditional ryokan and in particular our sweet and funny hostess (the owner) who managed to make us laugh lots despite the language barrier. The house is full of treasures, the onsen was lovely and semi-private and we could see herons on the river from our window. The food was a highlight, as everyone says, served in a private dining area. It's a much older house, full of charm and a few worn or rickety elements, and there's less privacy, but that's all part of the fun!

Amazing place and amazing staff! Very authentic Japanese experience. Everyone was very nice and attentive to all our needs and requests. The food is AMAZING! We had both breakfast and dinner. Super clean and intimate and friendly. The Ryokan is very close to the old city and has a beautiful view of the river.

Can't think of anything we didn't like. Everything was great and it's clear that the place is being run with much care and attention. It shows that even without English skills it's still possible to communicate and give excellent customer service.

Such a sweet Ryokan in Takayama! We stayed here for one night and loved the experience. At the check-in we were greeted by the lovely couple who runs the place. Despite speaking little English they communicated with us with kindness and were very welcoming. The room feels authentic and traditional, with a small balcony and a view to the small river nearby. The room was clean and quiet and we had a private toilet. The Onsen was definitely a highlight. We had it all to ourselves and loved the experience. Breakfast was early but good too (we chose the continental breakfast instead of the Japanese breakfast). Overall, it is a wonderful place, definitely recommended!

We loved this family ryokan. So close to all the major sights and shops. We l9ved the private onsen and our room had its own ensuite. The meals were an absolute highlight and Sumiko -San was an absolute delight. We hope we can come back soon as Takayama has been one of our favourite towns so far.

Usually slippers are offered, but this location didn’t have any. Not a problem, just walked in socks, but slippers would have also been nice since the floors can be cold in the winter.

The staff was so friendly! Best service I’ve ever received in years of traveling. The ryokan itself had a very homey feel.

Our most authentic stay in Japan! We loved the host couple and all the people that helped make Sumiyoshi Ryokan special. We felt like honored guests in this home. The food was amazing! Takayama is a walkable town and we had no need for any transport.

Staying here was the best experience we had in Japan. The hosts were amazing. Very old building with lots of charm. Location is great and central to Takayama. Recommend to stay in one of the rooms with a river view. Food was also great, we had breakfast both days and dinner one night.

We loved our stay here. I cannot recommend this Ryokan enough - if you get the chance I promise you the price is so so worth it. The staff are so friendly, the food is AMAZING, the beds are comfortable, the onsen itself is so lovely and relaxing. This is just a wonderful cozy place to stay in Japan.

The staff was absolutely amazing. There was an older couple looking after us who were so kind, fun, and hospitable. They were funny and sweet and made sure to take care of us. Our room overlooked the river and we had our own toilet. The bath was shared but it wasn't a problem for us, we only had to wait for 30 minutes one time and the facilities themselves are EXCELLENT. This stay was a highlight of our trip!

Not the fault of the hosts who did an excellent job of keeping the ryokan clean, but other guests should know that the onsen is not intended for personal use (e.g. to exfoliate in). Despite this being very clear on the signage, there was a guest who did not adhere to it.

The location was an easy walk to and from Takayama station and very close to the morning markets. The hosts were extremely welcoming and the breakfasts were incredible.

IVery traditional Ryokan and within walking distance to town. On river across from morning market. Food is amazing and staff is really exceptional with sweet elderly couple helping and managing the Ryokan. I will highly recommend this place.
