Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

FranceOld installations but this was exactly what we were looking for when we booked this ryokan. The hosts are not so good with English but everything was fine, even the description of every dish for the dinner and the coffee break.

SwitzerlandAbsolutely fantastic stay at Sumiyoshi Ryokan. We really wanted to stay at a ryokan during our trip to Japan. It is safe to say that we were very happy with our stay in this ryokan. The people there are very sweet and polite. When you arrive your are welcomed with matcha and tasty biscuits! The room is well configured and the futons are confortable. A Ryokan is not truly experienced without an onsen which Sumiyoshi Ryokan offers. On top of that, the dinner and the breakfast are delicious and offer a variety of food (meat, fish, rice, vegetables, soup,..). We highly recommend to stay here to experience a traditional Japanese hotel!

This is a great traditional ryokan, located on the river, close to the old town. Staying here was a great experience. We particularly enjoyed the common bath. The owners were extremely friendly and the Japanese breakfast was excellent. All in all, I highly recommend it.

United KingdomIt was difficult to know when the staff would come in to change the rooms from day use to evening and the same in the morning so we felt a little bit in the way at times. They were very polite about it though 😊
The staff were so friendly and kind to us despite us not knowing much Japanese. Their hospitality was exceptional. The traditional rooms and baths were great.

CanadaThere was nothing that I did not enjoy about the stay.
Our stay at Sumiyoshi Ryokan was truly exceptional. In all of my years travelling, this was perhaps the best experience at a hotel / B&B that I have ever had. The owners of the ryokan were very careful and thoughtful concerning all aspects of our stay. The care for the tiny details is really exceptional. The food is also very local and traditional. Especially the hoba miso included with the 'Japanese style' breakfast is phenomenal. And the dinners are elaborate and delicious. Even if you only eat breakfast and dinner, you will most likely not go hungry! On top of the essentially perfect execution of the actual details, everyone working at the ryokan is also incredibly friendly and welcoming. Even though it is a hotel, it really feels like you are a guest in someone's home. They have opinions concerning how things are to be done (the usual culturally Japanese expectations around cleanliness; but also the timings around breakfast, dinner; the arrangements of the rooms). This additional structure provides the experience of being transported into a different world, in a way which is entirely missing from many sterilized / universalized hotel experiences. And at every point, you feel that they are paying close attention to all aspects of your stay and they are quick to notice the moment something is slightly off. For example, when I accidentally wore the wrong-sized yukata, they immediately noticed and recommended that I swap to the correct one! And of course, Takayama itself is a wonderful town. The ryokan is centrally located and it is easy to walk around town to visit the many shops, temples, museums, and historical cites. If visiting Takayama fits into your itinerary and you have the opportunity to stay at this ryokan, I would suggest it without hesitation.

SpainThere was nothing negative during our short stay. The toilets and bathroom are shared with the other hosts but this was clear in the description and could be expected from a traditional house.
The best of our stay was the host family. They were so nice, so attentive and so helpful that they made our stay to become excelent. The ryokan fulfills the expectations of staying in a traditional japanese house: tatamis, futons for sleeping, the onsen, a beautiful small japanese garden... We enjoyed especially the private onsen. For some time the whole family could get the experience of a japanese onsen all together. The japanese dinner and breakfast were also wonderfull. Lots of different traditional dishes and the experience of getting the explanations and the help from the host family on how to eat them was quite amusing. Besides, we were provided with everything we needed, including the traditional yukatas and other ammenities.

Staying here was one of the highlights of our trip to Japan. The hosts are amazing, the location is wonderful, right on the river and across the river from a lovely, daily street market. The food was amazing and the rooms/facilities very clean. Don’t hesitate to book a stay here if you’re considering.

AustraliaNothing, I loved this place.
Loved the workers that looked after the accommodation, they were very lovely. We shared giggles over my large suitcase. The food was excellent, we never went hungry. It was a home away from home, the workers are very lovely and treat you like family. It was very close to the old town and was close to shopping. The accommodation is antique ryokan with many antiques around the hallways and rooms. I will be returning!

AustraliaTruly exceptional service from two of the older women working there. They taught us how to eat the traditional breakfast which they made fresh in front of us. The staff thought of everything and did little things like cleaning the wheels of our suitcases by hand. The location of our room looked over the stream and you could hear the relaxing sound of the water. Overall we loved the trip and would highly recommend it.
