Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Such a beautiful hotel. The photos don’t really do the place justice. The staff were so accomodating, our room was spacious and serene, and the beds were incredibly comfortable. The onsens (both outdoor and indoor) exceeded our expectations; they were incredibly peaceful, and barely populated (it was easy to have them to yourself most of the time). The staff were also a true highlight. They were a delight to chat with, and couldn’t have done more to accommodate our needs. Highly recommend this place!

United StatesEverything was great. It was a little musty, but this is probably because it was in the middle of June, the rainy season, and it is right next to the geothermal spring.
As a family, it was a great place to stay. We reserved a specific room for us instead of the dormitories. The onsens were great. The staff excellent and very helpful. The lounge and kitchen area are big and spacious and social, whether you are a family traveling together or a single traveler, it’s a great place to stay. It’s nestled off the road and in a small gorge, so it’s very quiet.

United StatesThe stairs and the location are probably the only minus that I could think of. Location a bit far off from Motohakone (the lake and the shrine and other attractions). There is a bus stop nearby but it takes about 35 minutes to get there, there is also a family mart and few restaurants about half a mile away but keep in mind that actual site/attractions area is a bit far off by bus. It was a bit difficult to get to the hotel/reception area given the rain from the bus stop (there is no footpath) and the stairs. We ended up taxiing to Odawara station on the way back, given the location and luggages.
Great views from private room facing mountain side and streams below, good indoor onsen. It was raining so the outdoor onsen wasn't open. The living space area has a full kitchen with appliances and cutlery. Despite the somewhat remote location, the place is packed with lively tourists and backpackers so the stay doesn't become lonely. Attached onsen is always a plus, the indoor onsen also had multiple washing area with toiletries (such as soap and shampoo).

CanadaNothing Some comments were saying it was in an isolated part of hakone but we didn’t find it a problem as there were numerous buses to go everywhere from early morning to around 9pm.
The private room with private bathroom was really spacious with nice view of the forest. When opening the window, you could hear the river. Everything was clean and well organized. We loved the beautiful public onsen: spacious, clean and with nice products for washing ourselves. They were also beautiful: the stones, the mural and the atmosphere. Everybody who worked there were nice and helpful.

Beautiful onsen experience - especially the outdoor onsen with the sounds of the nearby river. The site has a long history and the place was quite beautiful, especially the shared common areas.

Canadanothing. It’s spectacular
The onsens here are spectacular. The location is great, restaurants are a sort walk down hill 3 minutes. Just make sure you book them in advance, the staff here are so friendly they’ll book things for you no problem. They were extremely helpful with recommendations of things to do, places to eat, how to get there and bus times. You have to take a bus anywhere you stay in Hakone for the most part. This was my first guest house experience and wow, the facilities are really nice. The comfiest bunkbed I’ve ever slept in, and so spacious! you can’t beat the price for value.

SingaporeThe entrance could hv been made more conspicuous by the roadside. And more importantly, there is no elevator to support guests with heavy luggage to the reception counter.
Meals are not provided, if I am not mistaken. If I am, my apologies coz we had to go out to hv our meals or bring them back to eat or cook at the well-resourced lounge.

United StatesThe A/C didn't get as cold as we hoped, and our in-room bathroom was pretty cramped. Having the main onsen bath changing room separate (down a public hallway) from the outdoor onsen baths was a bit inconvenient.
We had a great one-night stay here, I wish it was longer! We booked a Family Room with Balcony and it was very spacious, with two seating areas and surprisingly comfortable bunk beds for our group of 4 adults. The public onsen baths were lovely and not at all crowded - the indoor bath was very spacious and the outdoor bath had a tranquil garden view. Nice provided yukatas and slippers to wear around the hotel. Check-in was easy and the front desk staff were helpful.

IrelandDuring my visit to Japan, I was trying to book accommodations that had an onsen at the property, and it was one of the best decisions I made. The onsen here was great, there were both indoor and outdoor ones, and the outdoor onsen, in the evening with all the sounds coming from the surrounding nature, was calmness on a level I never experienced. The place is close to a supermarket, the bus station, and the Open Air Museum and Gora Park are within walking distance (for Japan that means <1 hour). The indoor had a beautiful traditional design, and the helpful staff allows you to leave your things at the property before the check-in time.

AustraliaNothing to fault, a little far from some restaurants and many close early. The last bus to the towns is around 9pm so you need to get taxis We found a cool Japanese bbq (beef, pork) a few bus stops away “Yakiniku kiga” - all you can drink beer and whisky, on a river, very fun place.
We booked a twin room, beds were very comfy. The balcony overlooked a green lush canyon with a small waterfall, it was beautiful. The entire set up is well thought out and the onsen incredible. The backpacker pods looked great too. We would definitely stay here too.

BrazilOnly bad point is it is a bit difficult to arrive if you dont have a car, but there is a bus stop close by.
The hotel is so cute, it's in the middle of the mountain, with a very beautiful view. The decor is tasteful and everything was very clean. A very comfortable and spacious bed. The staff were so friendly. I asked for help hiring luggage delivery and they did everything for me. I feel at home. Wonderful stay. I Will definitely stay here again if i ever go back to Hakone.

United KingdomThe only gripe we had was the dorm was very hot. There are AC units but they are not set low enough. Once in your booth with the curtain shut the heat was almost unbearable. I had to get a fan from reception and kept it on through the night with the curtain open.
Fantastic guesthouse, we stayed in the shared dorm and were satisfied with the set-up. Modern and clean. Staff very friendly and helpful. Free coffee (beans and grinder) in the kitchen but nothing else food/drink wise. By far the best 'hostel' style acommodation I've stayed in. The booths are massive and will fit you, your bags and the provided towels etc. The onsen was lovely too. We went in each morning to shower (the only shower for dorm rooms is in the onsen) and there was nobody else in there. There are shower curtains if you're worried about privacy.
