Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United KingdomNothing, it was all good.
We liked the location and that it was very close to the Geisha district - short walk. It was also on a quiet but safe street.

United KingdomThe only issue is that the hotel is on a "busy-ish" road and if your room is facing it it can get noisy.
The room was a very good size comfy bed and great facility. The staff was super helpful and willing to go over the top to help. Position amazing, super center and very well connected!

MalaysiaThe breakfast sets are limited in choices. The only set that makes sense is the Japanese set. It comes with a piece of grilled salmon and some seasonal side dishes, that kind of repeat themselves after a while. But it is still worth it and very filling for a long day of endless walk outside in Kyoto.
This hotel is a newer building with ryokan-style rooms. The rooms are very new and clean. It comes with the smell of dry bamboo. We got a room without soundproofing but we could hardly hear any noise, except some foot steps from above and occasional traffic outside the window. But they are not in any way annoying, even though I am very sensitive to noise while sleeping. There is also a small laundry right next to the hotel.

FinlandThe laundry service they offered was difficult as it was presented to us as a "first come first served" basis service. We could not know how long it might take to get our clothes clean, as they only had one machine that they operated themselves. So we ended up doing our laundry in the laundromat next by.
Lovely stay in Kyoto where you can relax and decompress. We loved this modern ryoka-inspired stay. The common areas were very well curated, with beautiful traditional Japanese art and wooden work. We booked the hot bath a couple of times and it was a very nice experience, as we also got to open the little door on the side of the room to get some fresh air in. We appreciated the attentiveness of the staff, who always made sure we had everything we needed. They also helped us with shipping our luggage to the next destination. The location was in a calm area close to restaurants, bars, kombinis, and well connected.

IrelandNot much space in the Japanese style room to put your luggage - 3 of us had 20kg suitcases to the room was abit squished
We stayed in the Japanese style room and it was so lovely, very authentically Japanese. We stayed on futons on the floor which weren’t the most comfortable but still were a nice experience. Very clean and the staff were so lovely and helpful. The breakfast was also lovely - many options available and we enjoyed them all!

PolandThis is how Ryokan Hotel should look like! We were recommended with another hotel, but decided to visit "Kyomachiya Ryokan Sakura Urushitei" for one night and this was the real, comfortable experience we were looking for. If you like to get the most of the accomodation, check in early and use all the options it gives. Also, the breakfast included was the best of all we had during our Japanese trip. I'd definitely visit it again for longer than 2 - 3 days.

NetherlandsThe (paid) private bath was not worth the experience, can be skipped, it is just a tiny bathtub.
The room was spacious and very clean, was fun and comfortable sleeping on the tatamis. The staff was wonderful, friendly, accommodating and especially all speak fluent English! We loved the options for breakfast although not included in the price. And having the rental kimonos sweet ladies coming to the hotel to dress us up and style our hair :geisha style" was a special treat (paid additional and it was worth it!).

AustraliaNothing!
What an astonishingly brilliant experience! From check-in to check-out we were so impressed with everything about this wonderful ryokan. Location (walk to cool pontocho), the traditional Japanese room, Japanese breakfast, lovely staff who spoke excellent English, the beautiful lounge, decorations, rooftop, outdoor/shared areas. Our room was an absolute delight, we were so impressed with the design, tatami mats, mini balcony, and found the futons to be very comfy. We just loved the private onsen - booked it fr every night of our stay. We also booked the sake tasting night, which was great fun. I highly recommend this ryokan. It exceeded our expectations. A great ending to our holiday.

United KingdomStaff at check in were not overly friendly and didn't explain any of the extra activities that were available. Not an overly authentic ryokan experience. Only a shower in the room, there is a bath you can hire but it didn't sound very appealing.
The room was small but comfortable. The futons were comfy. Great location for walking to Gion. Plenty of restaurants nearby.

United StatesThe fact that the front desk is not a 24-hour front desk. Our original flight from Singapore was to arrive at Osaka airport at 10:00 pm and there was no way we could get to the hotel before 11:00 pm, so we had to change our flight. The only available option was a red eye that arrived at Osaka at 6:00 am. This meant that we arrived at the hotel at 8:00 am and had to wait until 3:00 pm to get into our room (7 hours!). I was thoroughly exhausted and unable to rest properly, resulting in a wasted day in Kyoto.
Location is perfect: close to shops, restaurants, train and subway stations, etc. Room was very comfortable. Breakfast was tasty. Staff was friendly and helpful, especially Farhan.

GermanyThe room was a bit dark as there were not sufficient light bulbs working. The bath tub was a bit too uncomfortable and did not do the Onsen feeling could be done more better. There could be a microwave in the common area for benifitng the hitel guest instead to wake the receptionist in middle of the night
The staffs were super friendly and accommodating. The location was very commutable and close to important bus station and sub way lines. The food was customized to favour our needs as we preferred without any mirin and opted only for fish. The room was very cozy and oriental.
