Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta, Iceland, Australia, Greece, Brazil and North Carolina. For properties in these regions, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

AustraliaA bit of a hassle to get anywhere especially if you need to do it early in the morning. At 7:30am our only option was to cab which is decently expensive. Actually also, the Japanese style beds are on the small side (I'm only 186 and my feet is sticking out).
Just exceptional service, food, room, view everything. The bath facilities were great.

CanadaNo complaints. Our private onsen and bigger bathroom were just across the door from our room, and while we would’ve preferred it was all attached this was no problem.
What a lovely experience! Our room was spectacular, with clear views of Mt Fuji. We recommend you wake up at first light to catch the best view! The kaiseki meal options were delicious and plentiful. It was also very easy to arrange transportation to/from the hotel. The staff were very kind. We were able to fully relax and enjoy during our stay :)

Singaporethe location is not as accessible. there are hourly shuttle buses to/fro the base of the mountain that takes around 15-20 mins hence it is important to plan around the bus schedules. in bad weather (e.g. fog) or heavy rain, the views from the room will disappear however this is no fault of the property.
the views from the room are spectacular in good weather, and the rooms are extremely spacious. There were also western beds available in the room Dinner on day 1 was very good, 2nd day's dinner was average. Onsen was fantastic, there are outdoor/indoor options and the outdoor onsen oversees the mountains and lake.

United StatesOur stay was over family week in Japan so the sites next to the hotel were extremely busy.
The hotel room had a wonderful view. The Japanese bath was delightful. We enjoyed dinner and breakfast at the hotel. Food was delicious, presentation perfect and staff professional and courteous. Also a runner, enjoyed the trails!

United StatesThe remoteness of the location is part of its charm and contributes to the zen vibe, but should be taken into consideration when planning how to see the sites that are further area. However, Motohakone is convenient.
Ryuguden is a lovely property with a beautiful location on the lake and, weather permitting, gorgeous views of Mt. Fuji from your room. The outdoor onson has a similar view and was delightful. The staff were top notch and very helpful in assisting us with logistics and verifying options for us given the weather event that was impacting area. The meals were uniquely interesting and I cannot imagine a better first time experience in a traditional Ryokan.

United KingdomI had the best massage (shiatsu) in my room, which had views of Lake Ashi (usually Mt Fuji too but not visible on this occasion due to overcast). The food was high quality, beautifully presented, and entirely Japanese (both dinner and breakfast), but no vegetarian options were available. The staff did their best to remove the meat dishes for us. The hotel offers peace, respite and tranquillity after 3 hectic days exploring Tokyo.

BelgiumWe were rained down and the last bus was late. Luckily we got a taxi to be there on time for check-in and the friendly staff was exceptionally helpful in making sure we got dry and comfortable as fast as possible. Literally seconds after arrival all stress from being late and wet were taken away. The room view was stunning even with a heavy mist in the evening of arrival and after an incredible evening meal we enjoyed the hot baths.

United KingdomIf you are not into Japanese food the set breakfast and dinner may prove a little daunting. The food is expertly prepared and presented though and if you do have dietary restrictions they are very happy to accomodate if you let them know.
A truly excellent experience staying here. Very authentic Japanese style hotel with a set Japanese menu for breakfast and dinner. The highlight of the stay has to be the adjacent spa/onsen which is free for guests to use. Great view of Mt Fuji across the lake, when it is not covered by clouds.

United StatesEverything about this hotel was amazing... the only thing I didn't like was leaving!
What an amazing place. Our first experience in a traditional Japanese Ryokan, with stunning onsen facilities, eating exceptionally prepared traditional meals, in a traditional tatami mat room helped immerse us in the culture and wonder of the area. We were fortunate enough to reserve a room with a private onsen, which helped us get more comfortable with the proper pre-bathing habits before using the public baths and provided beautiful private escape at other times. The staff, for me, was the highlight of our stay. Incredibly helpful in every aspect of our stay, from when an issue left my son stranded 30 minutes away on arrival day and we needed help arranging transport, to educating us on the use of traditional Yukata, to impeccable service and assistance any time we needed it. As an example it's worth mentioning that Hakone-en is not served well by Taxi apps that work well in other parts of the country, so while we were use to self-service cars using Uber and Taxi GO we relied on the staff to help make taxi arrangements for us at times that didn't match up with the shuttle. Also note Hakone-en at night does not have Konbinis or other facilities, so plan ahead when it comes to anything outside the hotel.

United StatesThere was nothing we didn’t like. Our family loved this stay on our trip. Although there were some foods in the kaiseki meal we couldn’t appreciate, overall it was delicious and a wonderful treat.
The property was well situated near the lake, near the smaller ropeway and a small town with some shopping. It had a 7 minute shuttle that would take you into town near the lake boat cruise. The property was a splurge for our group of 8, in 3 rooms. One of the rooms we got the private onsen which was very nice. The rooms are very spacious and traditional. Every amenity was available and the hot baths were luxurious. The front desk was EXTREMELY helpful and very professional and friendly.

United StatesFood was disappointing. Too many tofu and fish. Natto and eggs for breakfast would have been nice.
The best part is the view through their huge window. The hot spring was beautiful, it’s a long walk from your room. The food was a bit disappointing. We were always hungry after dinner even though we upgraded to a better meal plan. Some of the welcome staff don’t speak Japanese or English. We were guided to our room by a staff, but she didn’t say a word. But the Japanese staff at the front was wonderful. Their coffee machine is great especially their green tea latte.

United StatesWe had dinner and breakfast included in our stay. It is a set menu so it might not be the best for everyone. We were traveling with two children. Luckily there were fries and edamame on the additional drink menu which we could order separately for our toddler.
The location is breathtaking, right on the lake. Mount Fuji came out during our visit and we were so pleased. The onsen is a bit of a walk from the rooms, but so wonderful with the outdoor area overlooking the lake.

United StatesMenu was amazing but only if you love fish. English translation was unavailable except using Google Lens so it was difficult to know in advance. We were able to apply our subsequent meals to the partner Prince Hotel nearby property which has a buffet with variety of breakfast foods as an alternative.
Beautiful property and surrounding areas. Staff was kind and friendly. Awesome view of Fuji from this room 101. Pictures of this room type are accurate except that the private bath doesn’t have a clear window - it is frosted glass for privacy. The lake view is from the main room. Other room orientations may differ.

United StatesOur room with a private onsen was great and we loved the view even though it was too cloudy to really see Mount Fuji. We wanted a traditional ryokan experience and this was it from the tatami mats to the sliding painted panels. The kaiseki dinners were very fancy (eight courses) as were the Japanese breakfasts.

United KingdomIt would have been good to have had some Western food options. For some people, although beautifully presented, the cold raw fish and Japanese pickles may not suit everyone.
Overall, we enjoyed the traditional Japanese culture. The location is excellent for this purpose and also great for boat trips, viewing Mount Fuji and enjoying the onsen experience. Very spacious rooms with kitchen facilities.
