Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta, Iceland, Australia, Greece, Brazil and North Carolina. For properties in these regions, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.

By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

NetherlandsIt’s a pity the bedroom windows were facing the road.
It gave me an authentic Japanese culture experience! Love the surroundings. We went for a short but very enjoyable walk just behind the main building.

United KingdomNothing! We had a lovely time
We had a great time, clean rooms, comfortable futon beds, kind and helpful staff. Very generous size traditional breakfast and dinner, outdoor private onsens that you can hire. Lovely peaceful mountain location, great walks to lunch spots and shrines and temples

United KingdomI understand that in ryokans the food isn’t a la carte and that this is intended to encourage you to try traditional dishes you haven’t tried before. However as a fussy eater I wish I had been able to opt out of certain dishes as I was very conscious of my food waste.
A reasonably priced ryokan with lovely staff. The travel there was much easier than anticipated as the shuttle is really quite convenient. If you get there earlier in the day it’s lovely to get out and explore the areas with its beautiful shrines and bridges in the forested mountain. If you’re a heterosexual couple I would highly recommend the private onsen as it was lovely to be able to relax together rather than always having to separate for dips, we reserved the early morning slot which was wonderful as it meant the sun was out and we had a beautiful view of the mountain side.

United StatesThe only thing I had a hint of disappointment about was I thought we would sleep on futons but we had western mattresses.
Everything about this stay was exceptional. They were accommodating for our limited Japanese vocabulary. The experience was everything and more for two Japanese enthusiasts. The food itself was amazing, the outdoor private bath was a dream come true, the view from our room was magical. We were fortunate to come at a time when we had dinner outside by the river with Maiko entertainment and words cannot express how amazing it was. Truly will be the highlight of our trip.

The property was a bit far from the city center areas, but WELL worth it. Tucked away down a small hill, this ryokan felt private and relaxing, a perfect escape.

RussiaIt was unclear whether we needed to contact the hotel to book a shuttle bus or not so I decided to give them a call and ask about it. Turned out no reservation was required, we just needed to check the schedule information here and wait for a bus to pick us up at one of the stations. Once you arrive at the hotel bulding you are asked to change into slippers and walking all the way down to the riverside restaurant and back while wearing them was a bit of challenge as they were slippery (no pun intended).
Ryokan is located in a secluded area surrounded by picturesque forest and mountains and I assume it looks even more beautiful in the fall during momiji season. They gave us a free upgrade and we got a room in bekkan (annex) with our own open-air bath facing a small garden. There is also public baths area that guests can use for free and a private open-air bath you can reserve for about 3000 ¥ for 45 minutes. If you want to expericence some more of Japanese culture you can change into yukata (robes) and tabi (socks) in your room. In the evening we had traditional Japanese dinner in an open-air restaurant with river view which no doubt was a highlight of our stay at Momijiya, and when we returned to our room beds were already made for us. The breakfast was served indoors and was also very tasty and looked like a true work of art. The staff was very polite and helped with everything (we communicated in Japanese) and they carried our baggage to the room and even wiped clean the wheels of our suitcases. All in all, we really enjoyed our stay. Thank you for this wonderful experience. 本当にお世話になりました。

United KingdomThe food could be a little challenging at times. It was all beautifully presented but no clear information in English about what each item was. We have had more flavourful food elsewhere during our stay.
Very traditional Japanese feeling. Amazing views from the balcony into the forest. Having a yukata to relax in was nice too. We enjoyed the maiko performance with dinner.

KazakhstanThe walls are quit thin, you can hear people in the hall and other rooms. No supermarket near by or shop in the hotel to buy snacks and drinks. We were hungry after dinner at night and had no idea where to get the food.
Nice forest near by. Respectful staff. Enjoyed a private onsen. Dinner with geisha was remarkable

United KingdomBreakfast was too early for us and very unfamiliar to a western pallet. Although it was beautiful and generous. After dinner everyone seems to immediately return to their rooms... we would have liked to stay beside the river (which is beautiful) for another dew drinks... what is the rush? Also when the fire flies are out there is a really annoying voice over that kind of kills the magic, would be better to have kept the nice music going. No need to tell me about the fire fly larva... I can Google that later. All that being said, we really enjoyed our stay. It is a really beautiful place. These were just a few things we think they could improve and make it really perfect.
This was a very unique experience for us , as European travellers. It feels very traditional japanese and authentic. So some things are unfamiliar to us, but that's all part of the nice experience. The shuttle pick up from the train station was great. Bang on time. They gave us a free upgrade because it was our honeymoon to a cabin in the woods with a private out door onsen. It was very relaxing being in the trees. The food is beautifully presented and served beside the river. The second night we went for the sweet hotpot which was one of the best meals we had in 1 month travelling around japan. The second night we moved to the main building which is a actually a shuttle bus ride from the river (maybe 3minute drive) but still set in beautiful mountains. There is very little nearby. If you are a fusy eater, I would advise bringing some snacks. We had a couple beers also, which was nice to have in the room and enjoy the view. We were lucky enough to experience the fireflies and Maiko. If you want a traditional Japanese experience and a break from the busy cities we would highly recommend this place.

United StatesThe osen was a little too hot for my comfort so I didn't enjoy that part as much as I thought I would.
Excellent environment. Excellent staff. Very cozy setting. I wish I stayed longer to explore the neighborhood more. I also like the breakfast and dinner. I don't know anything about Japanese cuisine, so it was a nice learning experience.

IsraelThe ryokan is not very close to the city center, so you might reserve some time to get there early. It took us more than an hour to get there by a bus, and we had a bit of a hard time to find the actual bus (this one had no English translations on it like most of the busses in Kyoto)
Amazing ryokan, we arrived a bit late (around 18:00) but we were received well and we managed to get to the dinner on time. The Kaiseki dinner was very good, everything was delicious. There were yukatas in our room that we could wear, with clean socks, tea with sweets to have a tea break in the room, and the view from the room was very calm and nice. We reserved a room with futons, and while at dinner the staff rolled the futons for us to sleep in. The futons were surprisingly comfortable, and we had a very good sleep. We received a suggestion upon arriving to reserve the private Onsen on site, but we didn't use it unfortunately. Breakfast was very good too, although if you have trouble with eating a lot of fish and miso in the morning you might find it too much. They have a shuttle to 2 train stations, and we took it on our way back. It was very convenient as the ryokan is a bit far from the city center.

United StatesThat we couldn't spend more time there.
Everything! Booked in the middle of our 14-day trip to Japan, it was a wonderful escape from our otherwise hectic schedule and the crowds. I was amazed by the hospitality. They took care of everything from picking us up from the train station, and handling our bags, to keeping us on schedule to enjoy a private onsen, full kaiseki dinner and breakfast. We had lovely yukatas to wear during our stay(I wanted to take it home), and enjoyed tea overlooking the mountains. While you could spend more money staying at a newer luxury Ryokan, I wouldn't have stayed anywhere else. It was so traditional and the staff were phenomenal. Treated us like royalty!

United KingdomNothing, all great!
An amazing stay in a traditional Ryokan in a very scenic location. The complimentary shuttle service to and from Hanozono station was very convenient (they offered multiple drop off times to a few different locations). The traditional dinner and breakfast was very enjoyable and filling and were accommodating to our no meat diet (we are pescatarians and it was mostly fish/vegetables anyway, they replaced beef courses with tofu!). The room was so lovely with comfortable futons and the private onsen was so soothing and warm. I went for a morning walk around the area and the scenery was beautiful. You should definitely make some room for a night or two here as part of your Kyoto itinerary!
