Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta, Iceland, Australia, Greece, Brazil and North Carolina. For properties in these regions, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Really close to the main train station and the common baths were nice.

BrazilThe location is perfect! just some steps away from the train/subway station, full of restaurants and bars around (really many options). Bus for some of the main attractions from Kyoto is also very near and the Kyoto Tower is also just some meters away! We took the breakfast since we read that is a tradicional one, and it was AMAZING, the breakfast area were all in tradicional style and the food was wonderful! We really enjoyed the most! The room was pretty big, with more than enough space for 2 big luggages and also the bathroom was good, very clean, with enough space. We also loved that soon we come inside the Ryokan we leave our shoes down and everywhre we go barefoot! :)

New ZealandIt is a very old building and the rooms seemed very tired. The futon mattresses were a bit thin, which could be uncomfortable for some people but not too bad. The doors are old lock and key type doors (no key cards) and the hotel has a curfew which you must keep in mind.
It is located opposite Kyoto Station, very convenient when catching a train. Staff were friendly, helpful and spoke English well. Room was smaller than expected but clean and had everything you needed. The lounge area is spacious and there are onsen baths downstairs but we didn’t use them.

United KingdomIt is a very old Ryokan, but they are renovating! Two of the baths were closed for renovations and the other two were pretty nice. The rooms are fairly old but still nice and comfortable enough.

JapanThe property was good but quite expensive for the size of rooms. I’ve stayed at this Ryokan twice and both times I went, there was a weird odor in the lobby and rooms.
Excellent location, a 2 minute walk from Kyoto station. And good if you want to experience a traditional ryokan.

ChileThe people at the front desk struggle with speaking something besides Japanese and sometimes we couldn't ask or request simple things. They have many rules and few services, that compared to the price we paid left a feeling of low value for the money. The check-out time is inconveniently early and there was no asking them for a late check-out. The size of the rooms was kind of small, they fit 2, 3 or 4 in the same space, so our group of 4 felt a little tight. There wasn't enough room for the luggage. The 2-day anticipation needed to request meals made it impossible to try them, given that meals are decided with each day's plan. One day we decided to rest until noon and they told us the room could not be cleaned after that. Slippers at the front door are one size only and very small for me, so ended up walking barefoot inside the hotel.
The public bath was amazing, like having an onsen right there in your hotel. And the bathrobes in the rooms really completed the experience. Adding that to the aspect of the rooms we really felt like we lived in a ryokan. The entrance to the hotel is really nice and the location right next to a major train/bus station is tremendously convenient for visiting Kyoto.

United StatesThe building is rather old, to no fault of its own. The futon was a bit thin and uncomfortable, but overall still a great experience! Still highly recommend.
The staff were kind, and language barrier wasn't an issue! Extremely convenient location, it's right next to the station. Super great for a solo traveler, the bathroom and everything fit just right.

AustraliaI understand it's just a cultural difference, but those bean bag pillows are hell if you just want a good night's sleep. Bathroom is tiny but not wildly unlike the bathrooms in other similarly priced hotels.
A nice way to have a ryoukan experience without leaving the city. Location is great, right by Kyoto Station and near a number of restaurants and bars. Staff were nice. It certainly doesn't beat staying at a through and through ryoukan but it does well in a pinch.
