Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta, Iceland, Australia, Greece, Brazil and North Carolina. For properties in these regions, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

SingaporeNeed to leave key with counter each time we head out and got to return to ryokan by 11pm latest. Onsen bath is public and not private. Felt the price paid was higher than what we expected. But no regrets trying it out for an experience cos the owners were hospitable and made us feel welcome :)
Friendly owners and staff. Location is accessible and walkable to Nishiki market and shopping streets. Breakfast served was freshly prepared every morning.

Everything was awesome! We were greated by our hosts upon arrival and were given a tour of the establishment and the room. The public bath was cosy and very pleasant to use. We took the tradditional breakfast which was different every day and made with such care!! And the cherry on top, they offered us a chopstick holder when we left!! I would highly recommand

United KingdomThe 10am checkout time is earlier than anywhere else we stayed. But we still give this place a 10 out of 10!
This was our favourite place to stay during our trip in Japan. It was so nice to have a large room as many hotels have very little space. The staff/owners were all very kind and helpful. The location is excellent too - there are so many restaurants and shops within a few minutes walk. I really wish we had been able to try the breakfast, but I couldn't see the option when I made the booking. Maybe next time!

United StatesOnly that I couldn’t stay longer
The location from the local train station and Nishiki market is highly convenient. The staff are highly attentive, courteous and speak English; especially for those limited in Japanese. The room I was in (Hakusei) was vey spacious and could easily be adapted to fit more people (2-3 at most) and the atmosphere was very relaxing.

AustraliaThe owners are extremely welcoming. Our family thoroughly enjoyed the experience in this traditional-styled accommodation. Both rooms that we booked are relatively large, with dividing doors placed between the entrance, bath/toilet, and the main sleeping/sitting area. The tatami flooring was excellent and elevated the traditional experience. So did the kimono and tea set. The owners also set aside a smaller sized kimono for our 12-year-old daughter. Highly recommend.

IndiaIt might be because of renovation or the construction, but we had a problem with a weird heavy smell. We were not able to trace it's origin, but they were present in the bedrooms. As soon as we went out from the bedroom to the corridor or small hall/washroom, the smell was not there anymore. I was able to get used to it, but unfortunately my friend didn't have a good time with it.
Excellent location just a few steps away from Nishiki market (food haven) and 5 minutes away from Teramachi shopping street. The neighborhood is a mid-upper income residential area with convenience stores and ATMs within a few minutes reach. The couple managing the Ryokan are very polite, understanding and accommodating. If you are reading this: we loved your warm welcome. Please also extend our gratitude to the old lady who explained us and helped us to our rooms. The rooms were good, spacious and the futon mattresses were really comfortable. Excellent cooling too.

United StatesNice hosts, comfortable room, lovely sentō bath facility. Be aware that they close up shop at 11PM so you can’t do late nights out. Get the breakfast if you want to try new things — it’s varied, traditional, exotic to foreign palates, and delicious. But if you want eggs and bacon, go elsewhere.

United StatesWe liked everything.
The staff were exceptionally friendly and accommodating. The service was very personal - from helping us with our luggage to walking us out to our Uber as we were leaving. My son even received a special child-sized yukata to wear in the inn. The location is a block away from the famous Nishiko Market and walking distance to Gion. The inn is very quaint. The Akebono room was large with a balcony and private bathroom with soaking tub. The futons were comfortable. We had hot tea waiting for us when we arrived and upon coming back from our day’s activities. We loved it. Highly recommended.

Excellent place. The staff were so nice and friendly, the place is really cozy and they give you water, tea, cookies, yukata and more to have a good experience. Also they help us with the laundry (1,000 yen per basket). Unfortunately I couldn’t use the onsen but it looks great.

HungaryA little bit expensive. We also stayed in a very new, modern hotel in Kyoto, which was more comfortable and cheaper. But you have to try ryokans too when you come to Japan. And it is really authentic.
It is in a very good, central location. 10 minutes walk from Gion. Very authentic. Nice staff!

United StatesGreat to experience a more traditional style hotel. The location could not be better. Right near the market. We had stayed further away in a previous few days, and someways I like being further from the tourist areas at a lower cost. But this place is fantastic. The staff is so nice!
