Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

ItalyThere is nothing we didn't like. The cost of an overnight stay is quite high, but it is an advisable experience.
Awesome shukubo ("temple lodging") experience. Very nice and clean room, nice (even if quite small) onsen. With a little additional cost, you can have dinner (it's worth it).

New ZealandAs above.
Breakfast was beautiful - however my very western palette children have struggled all the way around Japan with the saltiness of Japanese food. Breakfast was great for me as an adult wanting to sample Japan as fully as I can, but I should have asked for plain fruit for my children.

United StatesOur room had a very strong odor the entire stay. Walls are thin and you can hear every movement of neighbors in the area. The room does not lock from the outside so it did not feel settling leaving our belongings in the room while we were out. Check out time is 9am - far too early.
Beautiful property and great location.

United KingdomStrict 9pm curfew meant we were concerned we wouldn't be able to do the Night Tour of Eko-in cemetery. Temple lodgings so expect thin walls!
Onsen facilities and an amazing experience - the temple encouraged tourists to join in the morning Buddhist rituals. Easier to get to Koyasan than you expect via local trains, buses & cable car.

Germanyeating sitting on the floor (hurts my knee); sleeping on the floor mats was a bit hard; shared bathroom in hallway awkward (like student housing); the walls are thin (literally of paper) so easy to hear neighbours etc; only vegetarian food; breakfast and checkout at very early times (daybreak). Obviously part of the "traditional" experience, but it's not very comfortable especially for older people.
beautiful historic temple with well-kept garden and grounds and some interesting collection items inside; nice atmosphere; good location close to attractions and bus stop; friendly staff.

HungaryI couldn't take a shower as the only facility I could find was located inside the onsen which was not allowed to be used by people with tattoos.
Gorgeous temple in the heart of Koyasan with beautiful garden and pond. We had a great stay there, the morning ceremony was a special and unforgettable experience.

AustraliaCouldn't have dinner despite booking a day prior as specified on booking.com - need to book three days before. Made it difficult as there are not a lot of options in the town.
Great experience and very peaceful up in the mountains - makes a nice change from the city. Beautiful property and very easy location - straight off the bus and in the front gate. Onsen were really nice and deserted.

Italynothing. all great
i cannot believe some people have written bad comments on this structure. Place is superb, staff super kind, though bathrooms are shared they are very clean. Room is a typical Japanese one. the onsen experience was great. i could enjoy both the carbonated hot spring and the outdoor bath by the way I was very lucky and I was alone. I also had the opportunity to follow an early morning cerimony with Buddist Monks. Dinner (which has to be booked 48hrs in advance) is very rich and tasty. Breakfast is a typical Japanese one with a lot of good things to try. An experience I strongly recommend. ps it may seem a bit difficult to reach but actually everything is very well organized and from Osaka it does not take a lot.

South KoreaI cannot say I Disliked. But one opportunity for improvement: we had a delicious dinner and nice explanation of what we were served all in Japanese, so we could not understand at all 🙂. It would be really nice and helpful if we could get a english menu:description of what was served.

AustriaIt was fully booked with people from bus tours around Japan. It took away a lot of the authenticity. But I believe, this would be the same in any of the temple that you can stay at.
very interesting place to stay at. Keep in mind that breakfast is Japanese style, and the sleep arrangement is a futton (I personally slept very good on it)

PortugalWe were there in April and it was extremely cold. the temple was open all day so it was freezing everywhere. we had dinner at the temple, while the food was very beautiful and nicely presented it was almost tasteless and lacked explanation so I think the temple should label the food or explain while they are serving it.
the temple is stunning and the morning ceremony is completely worth it

Australiamy room had a view of the car park. I was really tired from travelling and walking around Koyasan, then had the early dinner, however my futon wasn't put down for another couple of hours and I was desperado to go to bed. Not the property but other visitors to Koyasan who were disrespectful of the origins of the town and those who live there. they seemed to visit Koyasan because it's a bucket list tourist site, rather then a sacred site for Buddhists or those who appreciate Japanese history and culture. Best to go somewhere else than Koyasan if you are going to complain about the food, the temple lifestyle and customs, and think that there is nothing to do because it's just temples and "a cemetery". it's wonderful if you go with the right attitude.
outstanding food. I paid extra for the unique Koyasan monks' vegetarian "feast" and highly recommend it. it was beautifully presented and served in a lovely room with screens between guests. More comfortable and aesthetically pleasing than some other temples in Koyasan, and it had hot spring baths inside and out. the ceremony hall was beautiful, and we had a quick tour of the temple treasures and very beautiful garden outside the ceremony hall, complete with flowering cherry tree. Lovely room, very warm with heater and air con. very comfy and warm futon. the takata was long and beautifully patterned in blue and white with a dark blue warm jacket to go over the top. it wasn't until I spent the next night in a different temple in Koyasan that I fully appreciated how very good Fukuchiin really was.

CanadaThe early check out time (10:00 am), cold unappetizing breakfast, and no dinner options. If you don't pre-order dinner at the temple you are out of luck. The town of Koyasan closes for dinner - we went hungry after a long journey to the location. While this is no fault of the temple, we wish they could of specified this when booking - we would have gladly paid the additional dinner fee. The coffee shop was also not open in the morning. It seemed very expensive in retrospect.
The location, grounds, and onsen were amazing. The room was quiet and had a beautiful view of the gardens.
