Read more– opens a dialog boxEach review score is between 1–10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We're currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate "subscores" in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and other similar details.

By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).

NetherlandsThe hot bath was (way) too hot for my liking, but that is more a preference than a complaint.

NorwayThe amount of chlorine in the bath water was too much, otherwise I cannot fault it.
We loved this ryokan, our son wanted to stay longer than our one night. Authentic, charming and very clean. The tea and kimonos were waiting in the room and the owners were so attentive and always on hand to help. Lots of duvets and blankets allowing us to adjust temperature during the night. Very centrally located right down the street from Zenkoji and with parking right across the road in a private car park for 500 yen.

United States of AmericaAs I read in other reviews it was difficult to carry my large bag up the steep stairs but luckily we knew what we were getting ourselves into.
We loved the traditional feel of the accommodation. Despite the language barrier the owners were very sweet and welcoming. They even gave us hand warmers for a chilly day out.

Location is great. Charming older building with tatami floors and very intricate staircases. Reminded me of that movie Labyrinth.

United States of AmericaThe building was beautiful, but bathroom was only on the second floor and the stairs were very steep and slick, may be difficult for some (especially to use bathroom in the night!)
We loved our stay! The hosts were so kind and accommodating. Onsen was wonderful, our room was cozy and clean. The location was also great between the station and Zenkoji temple, and right next door was a great soba shop.

Beautiful, tradtional Ryokan. It's an old house, but super nice and clean. You can also make use of the onsen (warm bad). The location is very good (in the main street of Nagano, close to the tempel). The owners are super friendly. They don't speak so much English, but they are really kind!

SwitzerlandThe owners where so caring and nice. They even let me put my bicycle indoors. I think we all just somehow liked each other. The Ryokan has an old, cozy character. I absolutely loved my room and felt very much at home. I would for sure stay there again, when I come to Nagano in the future😊

United KingdomThe breakfast was very authentic Japanese, but is not included in the standard price, and we struggled to book it, as we received no response to our messaging. A Japanese friend had to phone them up. Our Room had a wash basin, but toilets and showers are communal, and some rooms don’t have wash basins
This felt like an authentic Ryokan experience with Futons, Kimonos provided and baths (separated for men and women). The hosts are exceptionally friendly and helpful - almost mysteriously appearing to support the shoe/slipper ritual at the door every time. They speak almost no English. Very well situated for the temple and local eateries.

GermanyOur room faced the street and it was a bit loud and bright. Probably Japanese houses have thin walls. The onsen didn't make the cleanest expression. The owners don't speak much English so prepare a translator if you have questions.
Very traditional kind of stay. The couple that runs this place is super lovely, they always greeted us at the entrance and as we were leaving. It's super close to the temple and on the prettiest street of Nagano. The room is very spacious and you get fresh green tea in a clay pot every day. Futon beds were surprisingly comfortable.

United States of AmericaThis is more of a complaint for booking.com. Unlike what was on the website, meals are *not* available if not arranged at booking. The dining room is just unable to accommodate all guests. We were disappointed not to enjoy any meals on site, which were highly rated by others.
The owners are a dear old couple that meet you at the door 24/7. We don’t speak Japanese and they don’t speak English, but we got on fine. The inn is charmingly ramshackle - all twisty stairs and rooms tucked in odd locations. The location is fantastic - right on the street to the temple and with plenty of restaurants nearby.

JapanAlthough I love the architecture and interior of the Ryokan, it is not quite convenient to the travelers who are carrying heavy luggage as there is no elevator and the stairs are quite steep.
The interior and atmosphere is very nostalgic and relaxing, and the Ryokan's owners, an elderly couple, are very friendly. They are always there to welcome me when I come back and see me off when I leave, which it's very heart warming. They are also happy to chat with me and share the stories of the Ryokan. I have only tried the breakfast at the Ryokan. The breakfast is delicious and served with local pickled vegetables. The location is excellent, sitting on the main street before Zenkoji Temple alongside with many traditional & beautiful shops, cafes & restaurants.

AustraliaSleeping on the floor isn't for everyone. We lacked japanese so we struggled with communication a little the building is a real mismatch doesn't feel tok quint instead it's fairly industrial for a ryokan with extensions of the years but I think this is still correct on what a ryokan is the onsens are filtered
The family's owned bussiness were very friendly and helpful best they could locations right next to the temple and the rooms felt very authentic

AustraliaVery steep stairs of unequal distances made carrying bags up 2 floors interesting.
The host couple were very warm and helpful with explanations on directions and recommendations for great meals . Great position close to Zenshoji temple , art gallery and museum with much history to discover along the road to get there about 1 km from the station. The traditional Ryokan exudes yesteryear charm and gives some insight into a traditional Japanese home. It was comfortable and bedding exceptionally warm on a very cold winter stay. Great onsen onsite to relax after a busy day exploring. Thank you for our wonderful experience and stay!
