The way the rooms have been built in to the cliff is very ingenious although our room with a double bed was a little bit cramped and some of the decoration was looking a bit jaded. We also booked an evening meal and although the food was very nice it was overpriced for what it was.

The location was the main reason for booking the Grotto especially at this time of year when the sea birds are coming home to nest.

The mattress was showing signs of wear and could feel the springs. The overhead shower had been disconnected, I think due to the size of the shower cubicle. The taps needed attention, the left was so, so hot and the right tap, which should have been cold, was hot until you ran the tap for a few minutes.

The entry was a little off putting when we pulled up…but I’m sure a little refurb in the future is probably being planned.

Great location on the wild North Sea coast. Our room was gorgeous with 180° views of the ocean and cliffs. We had a lovely meal downstairs in the ‘cave’ restaurant, meeting a lovely young man serving, who’d been to Australia recently. we enjoyed a blustery walk along the beach and cliff top before leaving! This was a highlight of our 4 week trip to England/UK!

Outside areas dirty , tables not cleaned after eating, g&t served without additions and in wrong glasses. Lobster dry and not much meat ..needed garlic butter on

Room was a little bit tired but biggest disappointment was the breakfast option (toast or cereal).......a nice English breakfast would have been perfect.

Location, views and staff were amazing! Would recommend a sea view room (I'd have been slightly disappointed if it hadn't have been for that view).

Small room, small bed and small bath. All though it was a nice night away I could have spent less at a luxury spa hotel. I don’t it was value for money and believe it was too highly priced for what it is.

Very strange set up for breakfast. Not continental, nor a full English, but toast, drinks, and cereal. Also the hotel in general has a lost identity. A mish mash of styles. So much potential and very unique but could be so much better

The room although having a gorgeous view was quite cold even with the heating turned up.

The location is superb and steeped in history, the unique nature of the access only by lift makes it quite quirky. The bar and and seating area acres directly onto the beach. The restaurant is quaint and cosy in a section of the cave. The food was excellent and reasonably priced. The location is just outside South Shields but close enough to access the facilities of the town.

It's in the rock so it's gonna be a bit pongy.... Which it was. You get used to it.

Not what was shown in the photos , we paid 270 on booking com for a cave room with a roll top bath both shown in the photos and in special requests we put birthday banners in room .we received a room with no cave walls and a shower not a bath ( our new house has no bath tub so this was a selling point for the hotel for me ) after the initial disappointment staff were amazing so saved the evening due to their hard work and happy attitude. Only recommendation is take your own mugs and tea coffe sugar and milk. The lift and bar closes at 10 pm and reopens at 10 am so can run out of the sachets fast.

Staff and the meal were absolutely amazing and the view was to die for as was the food. The food was served quickly and with a smile . The staff worked extremely hard. Throughout our stay and tips were well deserved
