A little bit dated ( it is an old hotel ) Room didn't look like it had been cleaned thoroughly. Eg. Coffee/tea marks on window sill and bedside table needed wiping. Fluff on carpet like floor hadnt been hoovered. Bed was clean though. We only stayed one night as going to theatre so despite a few niggles it served our purpose.

Staff were extremely friendly. Bed very comfy. Good breakfast . Old and quaint hotel with significant history.

Breakfast was very poor, had to wait 10 minutes for the breakfast buffet to be topped up, then not everything was there. No alternative to fried eggs, we were told after by the manager that the staff should have offered us this. One big tea pot with only one tea bag in , we had to ask for another one to be added. There was only 2 young boys waiting on the tables, there should have been a senior member of management there to make sure everyone was ok. We told the Assistant Manager when we booked out, he said he would go through and see the staff , too little too late. I wonder if he would later ring us later, but no. I hope they have made some changes, £140 for the room, and £58 for 2 drinks and a bar meal was our treat .

The hotel was lovely, steeped in history, and centrally located to the town of Buxton.

It was just a little tired, decor wise but difficult to be anything else with the age of the building.

We went into the hotel bar to grab a quick snack didn’t have most things on the menu. At 6.30 pm On a Friday the drinks we had were not the best the beer was flat.then the coke in the Jack Daniel’s was also flat and warm. My girlfriend did have the salad the only vegetarian thing they had on the menu they had. Expensive for the little bowl full she had.

Location nice and traditional great value and a beautiful building. Really nice and warm home welcoming feeling throughout the hotel.

There was a heated radiator in our bathroom with no window or way to turn the radiator down. This meant the bathroom was really hot whenever you went into it and especially since it’s summer.

Breakfast was lovely, the room was clean. It was really interesting to see that Mary Queen of Scots had stayed here, there were some really cool artefacts in the hallway relating to the hotel and how it used to be.

Sadly there was one bad point, that was the mattress in our room which was absolutely awful. You could feel every spring in it which meant not a wink of sleep for neither my wife or I.

The staff were all excellent, very attentive and polite. We ate here, the food was very nice but slow coming. It was quite busy in the restaurant which is probably why. The hotel is also perfectly placed for the Opera House.
