Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.

Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.

United KingdomThe flat was advertised as non-smoking, however, upon arrival there was an overwhelming smell of smoke in the property, especially the living room. We had to move several furniture items (chairs etc) to the balcony, and use air freshening sprays whenever we had to be in the living room. So we barely managed to make use of that space as a family, staying mainly in the bedrooms. One of us is allergic to dust and had a hard time sleeping. Luckily the weather was good so we spent most of the time outdoors. We contacted the host immediately upon arrival to make him aware of the situation, and also some other minor issues we spotted (which didn't affect our stay). Although he was apologetic, at no point were we offered a solution. On the first day we thought the smell was just in the air, but after the first night we realised the smell was ingrained in some of the furniture. So I messaged the host again to explain we had to move some items to the balcony, again he merely acknowledged our actions. Fair enough, I didn't ask for anything specific, but I didn't know what might be possible, and I'd have expected a little more proactivity from the host as well. They said they'd have the place deep cleaned after we left, which may well be the case but didn't change the unpleasantness of our stay. Also unclear on why the flat was not deep cleaned before, I cannot believe that the smell went unnoticed... it was still there after we left, albeit fainter after furniture being aired out for days, and a whole bottle of air / fabric freshener. We even considered terminating our stay after the first night, however, at such short notice we couldn't find anything else available within our budget... A shame since we were really looking forward for that stay.
Location is convenient, very close to train station and easy access to city centre. Flat is pleasant and spacious.
