Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United KingdomUnderstandably all accommodation in Sunderland and surrounding area was more expensive that night due to the concert, I wouldn't pay £175 for this room in normal circumstances. Your regular price mark seems more reasonable. There was a smell of dump upon entry to the room, although the only visible signs of it where on the ceiling in the bathroom. Both room and bathroom were cleaned but we could see some areas with thick layer of dust. Extractor in the bathroom would definitely help - opening the window wasn't enough to keep the ceiling dry. Barriers behind windows in the room didn't feel like there's a safe way out in case of emergency, although we did notice later that our room was next to the emergency doors. We didn't have a parking space available as one car blocked the access to the last space - just next to the entrance to the annex. It was too narrow to get to. Another car parked over to spaces so we couldn't use this one either. Having a designated parking bay would help to avoid this. Cooked breakfast offering would be great.
Excellent location, great communication with the hosts, easy check in, lovely refreshments box. CD of Bruce Springsteen and personalised note added a nice touch to the experience. I liked the style of the interior. Shower water pressure was great :)

United KingdomExcellent communication with owners. Couldn't have been any better. Lovely welcome card and surprise gift, which was so touching considering I had travelled from North of Scotland to see Bruce Springsteen! If I was visiting Sunderland again, this would be my first choice.

United KingdomCouldn’t get the heating to work in our room, therefore it was chilly. Water in shower wasn’t draining away properly, therefore had to turn shower off and on to allow water to drain away so as not to flood the bathroom
Good location. Thankful for last minute booking.

United KingdomSlight issues with water pressure in taps in room. 2 pillows would have been better, but they did ask if there was anything they could do to make our stay more comfortable and in hindsight I wish I had asked for this at the beginning of our stay
Very comfortable stay, very clean room, loved the self checkin and out. Despite no one being present we were well communicated with during our stay and felt very looked after. Hard to get a better location

United KingdomI think it would have been nice to have 2 chairs and perhaps a little fold away table that we could have eaten at
This was a very quaint accomodation, situated close to the sea front and had many nearby amenities. The room was very clean and well presented. It had a mini fridge and a microwave as well as the usual kettle.

United KingdomGreat difficulty checking in. Despite arriving in the time slot I had specified there was no one to let me in. I rang the number provided on a notice on the front door but the person I spoke to directed me to a side door where he gave me its entry code. I was then directed to a room which was undergoing a “deep clean” having been trashed by the previous occupant. After I complained he realised his mistake, he had apparently thought I was someone “ from the council”, directed me back to the front door and gave me its entry code. Guests arriving at an agreed time after a long journey should not be expected to stand outside making phone calls to gain entry or be mistaken for workmen. The quality of the Mayfield accommodation is badly let down by such a poor reception which has been a great disincentive to book here again.

United KingdomWe stayed at the Mayfield several times when it was a guest house and although the accommodation is still of the same high quality it felt quite impersonal without the presence of the hosts who always made us feel welcome on arrival, over breakfast, and on departure. The lack of Freeview TV channels was a great disappointment. Microwave oven only 700w.
The location and accommodation are excellent.
