An affordable stay in an historic building

The building has fallen into a bit of disrepair and needs some renovations (although this is reflected in the price and was to be expected). The beds were a little uncomfortable, and there was no shower curtain, so it was difficult to not get water everywhere.

It's an impressive building, with a great view over the hills. The room was spacious, and we enjoyed being able to sit at the table by the window. A reasonable price compared to many other places in the area. We had a car and didn't mind that it's a bit in the middle of nowhere, but it wouldn't be suitable for anybody using public transport or who isn't happy to drive to a nearby town for food or supplies.

Having read the history of the property I hope it can be renovated to its former glory

The room was absolutely fabulous, a four poster bed and amazing views. Having read the reviews we had some concerns but if you need a good bed for the night at a cheap rate this is ideal. Tea, coffee and milk provided in a kitchen.

The lodge is an amazing place, so much history, it's got a self sufficient kitchen so we ate in our room on a table and chairs with an amazing view, we even stayed an extra night, when we were leaving we was met and showed the original library, we will definitely be returning 😀

Stairs Uncomfortable sofas - too low. Difficult to find location...poor signage on roadside No answer on phone when tried to contact Bathroom - bath leaked onto floor and into bedroom Bathroom light not working Shower poor Very dated decor - money needs to be spent to update and modernise to justify the cost of rooms - currently very over priced

    Comfy bed View from room

The personalized welcome, accommodating an early arrival. The hand written welcome card. The history of this 1900 century home. Ainsley’s passion in restoring the beauty to this forgotten treasure. I was so lucky to have meet Ainsley she is a wonderful host. The view is unbelievable.

Aultnagar Lodge clearly is a work in progress; Ainsley and Sam are in the process of restoring the property to its former glory. We didn't mind having a shared kitchen, but other visitors might object to that. One of the two rooms we had booked was lovely, the other one could be described as 'functional' at best. Give Ainsley and Sam some time to restore this property and it'll be a banger!

Fantastic location, quirky property and one of the best nights sleep we had during our week-long trip in the Highlands!

Would be so mch better if breakfastw as provided but then again it would just add to the cost which as it standfs is pretty damn good value.

Nice welcome from Ainsley. She was very friendly and made sure i had everything i needed. Quirky and remote old Lodge. Lots of character. Very very quiet so make sure you like that. Tea and coffee facilties provided as well as a full working kitchen BUT you will need to bring your own provisions. Lair is 5 miles up the road and there is a Spar there where you can grab some food shopping. So if you are coming get yourself organised and you will enjoy your stay. Or better still, bok a table at The Pier restaurant in Lairg. They also do a breakfast and open at 10am. The even let me park my van there whilst i went off cycling for 4 days with my 5th being back at the Lodge. Made my logisitics so much easier.

It is an old historic house with all pros and cons. We enjoyed the stay!

This house has so much history, it is from 1910 and was one of the most modern houses then. Ask for a Tour through the remaining original rooms! I loved to help restoring this Beauty to its old Grace with Our stay.

Very sad to see such a beautiful building falling into disrepair. Window smashed & just left to the elements. Lack of TLC to the building itself. However, this would be a mammoth task, one of which will hopefully be tackled before it’s beyond repair.

Absolutely stunning location. The room was huge & traditional. Four poster bed, loved it. Everything was clean & well presented. A welcome card, a really nice touch. Kitchen was also clean & equipped for basic needs. Perfect. Waking up to the magnificent view, I will never forget that view.

Remarkable value for money in a scenic spot

Well signed from the main road, but there is then a left-hand turn up a fairly steep gravel track that probably needs another sign; it could be missed otherwise. I managed the gravel track fine in a standard car, but motorbikes might struggle a bit.

Impressive old building in a lovely bit of the Scottish Highlands. Rooms are excellent value for money, with en-suite facilities and a comfy bed. Straightforward self-check-in system with a key-safe for each room situated in the main entrance lobby; this was communicated clearly well in advance. Very friendly and helpful proprietors. Good communal kitchen area, which is well-equipped.

Remote Lodge - Good for Solo Traveller

I can imagine for longer stays or if you do not share my mindset or circumstance then this property may not be for you. But I think it provided fair value for money for a one bed ensuite with shared kitchen facilities.

Context: The building is an old manor property that was a hotel many years ago, and has since been purchased and is in the process of being restored. The rooms available are in a "restored" area of the property. I personally liked It (as a mid-20s solo traveller, looking for a one night stay on a budget.) It was pretty cool place with history The views of the landscape from the hallway were stunning. It was much much cheaper than other hotels in Lairg. The kitchen let me make my own dinner and breakfast and therefore saved money. The host was available on arrival (at 4PM) to show me the room and also the building. I had my bicycle with me and they let me lock it up inside the property. Everything worked in the bedroom, electricity, hot water was fine, the WiFi was okay! The kitchen was well equipped, and the host left out bottled water for drinking.

A surprise country lodge that is comfortable- large rooms, beautifully appointed.
    • Leisure trip

Due to a previous theft of the individual room router equipment, the internet was only available in the kitchen room. for a one night stay this was okay. The remoteness from the local town of Lairg was a factor - it was 5 miles from town so upon arrival, it seemed too much of a drive to go back to find food for the night. The room was accessed through a lock box key arrangement so we didn't see anyone upon check in. It appeared a. bit dark and deserted. Once inside, it was beautifully lit and decorated. We did eventually see the caretaker later that evening and the next morning.

I was definitely surprised by the size and comfort and decoration of the room. A four poster canopied bed was definitely not what I was expecting. The room was warm and the bed very comfortable. There was a kitchen room down the hall that was very adequate for our needs.
