This was such a perfect overnight stay. The host was lovely and accomodating, the location was perfect, bed was very comfortable and the restaurant downstairs was the best meals we have had in Germany. Would absolutely stay again!

If you need a hotel you can drive up to, this one won’t work. The bed was too soft for me, and the curtains were not blackout curtains. It was fine for Dec, but would be a struggle in June.

Perfect location for walking around the town, very quiet side street. The staff is so nice. Breakfast was delicious. The building is adorable. Our room was super cozy, good sized, and quiet.

These are more things guests should be aware of rather than genuine gripes about the property: Yes, the floors aren't completely even. It didn't bother me. You're staying in a building that's hundreds of years old, so I say that's part of the charm. I had to re-sign into the wifi network every time I went back to the hotel for some reason, but other than that it worked well. Room was a bit colder than I would have liked but it was no trouble at night, and it was also December, so that's kind of on me. I realized at the last minute that one of the glass bricks in the bathroom window was propped open as the only ventilation, so that's likely an easy fix.

Stay was exceptional!! Service was the sweetest in all of Germany and the room was nice and clean; perfect for my stay of 2 nights. As a professional idiot getting there via Google Maps was a bit worrying because there's no listing for "Gästehaus Alter Keller;" there's only "Restaurant Alter Keller." Fear not, the guesthouse and restaurant are in the same building. You check in at the reception for the restaurant and from there they gave me the option to add dinner reservations and breakfast buffet (10€/person.) Highly recommend that breakfast. Bathroom is directly attached to the unit and private. The building is right in the city center off the main tourist road so you can immediately walk out into your day in the city.

Because it’s located near the center of town, and Rothenberg is an ancient town, some of the streets Google maps tells you to take to get to the property are very narrow, and you can’t tell if they’re pedestrian only, one-way, or okay to proceed on. Can be rather nerve-wracking for first-time visitors! I’d suggest getting really clear on best driving directions to the property (you’ll just drop your things off and then park your car in a public lot nearby).

The property is so charming, plus our “family suite” was quite spacious! Minutes on foot to everything, too.

Narrow streets to get to the guesthouse and need to park in a parking lot 10 min walk away. Rooms are upstairs on a steep curved stairway so be sure you are able to carry your bags. Also floors are creaky and totally not level, sometimes felt dizzy just walking around. Random steps up and down so watch your step. Internet was slow and cut out often.

Hotel is in a very central location, just 2 minutes walk from the Market Square. It is very quiet at night. Convenient restaurant right downstairs recommended by Rick Steves although we did not try it. Building is very picturesque.

In ordinary circumstances there would have been little to dislike about Alter Keller. While recognising there is little the hotel can do about the weather, the top floor room we stayed in was very hot! Notwithstanding the uncomfortable night (30degC at midnight), I would thoroughly recommend the Alter Keller and we did enjoy our stay.

Alter Keller is a charming Hotel close to the centre of Rothenburg's old city. Our room was large, modern and well appointed. We found the entire establishment to be both clean and efficiently run. The staff were friendly and helpful. As the day we arrived was 35 degC, we were particularly impressed to find a crate of mineral water bottles near the stairs labelled for the use of guests! Bike storage was in a side corridor, but secure from the outside. We had dinner at the restaurant and the waitress spoke excellent English and was very helpful with my gluten free request. The food was of excellent quality and very tasty.

on a hot day/night the lack of air conditioning is an issue. it doesn’t happen often that it is 92 at 8pm.
