Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

South AfricaI was very happy and liked the fact that it felt like home away from home.
I loved the house! It's a beautiful home full of character and one feels right at home from the moment you arrive. It's warm and inviting. The breakfast is a real treat and beautiful views from the dining room make it very special.

GermanyPersonally I loved my stay there. You will not only stay in an amazing house which is kept super clean and receive a great breakfast, you will also get to know the super sweet people, who run the place. Maria was super open and helpful about anything. There are some reviews, which I think are a bit undeserved based on wrong expectations, so I will try to help here: If you expect a distanced and anonymous "hotel" atmosphere, this is not the place for you. If you want a bed and breakfast which offers you - besides a clean room and a good breakfast - an immersive experience of people living in Rio, this is your choice.

United KingdomThe room was really small for two people but it was hard to tell from the pictures, I should have looked more closely into the square footage so my mistake but I would recommend choosing the bigger room option if you are two people.
The communal spaces are beautiful, amazing views and friendly host

BrazilThe house is absolutely beautiful, with a peaceful patio and pool area. The dining area has a view of the Redeemer. The staff, I believe it was Felipe at the time, was incredibly accommodating and the breakfast was great. Santa Teresa is a great area and I would definitely return to Casa Vermelha again!

NetherlandsYou can hear the cars on the streets which can be a little annoying unless you have earplugs / soundproof headphones.
This gorgeous guesthouse looks just as beautiful as on the pictures, but it is an even better experience than that! Maria Teresa is an extremely warm and attentive host. She helped us understand the area of Santa Teresa (which is about a 20min walk to Lapa), gave us support and recommendations and made us one of the best Caipirinhas I have ever tried. A great person to talk to: she is active in her local community and generously explains Brazilian culture and society if you are curious. You feel invited into her home. The breakfast is absolutely delicious with fresh fruits grown in the Casa Vermelha garden (which you can also explore - see photos of view and garden) and taken in the dining room with a view on to Christ the Redeemer. I loved that it was possible to be flexible with time of breakfast and Check-out, which was appreciated. Haven't tried it but it is possible to do some laundry at a fee. We enjoyed sitting in the hammock on the porch and using the pool when it was hot out. I believe only 1-2 rooms are rented out a time, so it felt fairly private.

United KingdomThe bathroom is across the hall from the room so not for someone who would require complete privacy.
Incredible location perched atop the hills of Santa Teresa overlooking Christ the Redeemer. The villa feels very safe, secured by walls on all sides, and boasts a beautiful garden with a small lap pool. The hosts are a delight and the complimentary breakfast is something to look forward to every morning, along with the company!

United KingdomNothing! Bear in mind that you might be sharing a bathroom with other guests. That's not a negative (and was not a problem at all during our stay).
Maria Tereza is the most welcoming host I think I have ever stayed with. She is so generous with her time and I loved conversing with her in the morning over breakfast, as well as with the other guests. The house itself is beautiful, a true gem in a fascinating part of the city. Santa Tereza is a more cultural and artistic area, and as two females travelling alone, we felt very safe walking around. Maria Tereza also invited us out with her to a jazz music performance nearby, which was very generous of her and a truly unique experience (we would never have found this place on our own, it was full of locals from the area). Overall I strongly recommend staying at Casa Vermelha to anyone who wants to experience an authentic side to life in Rio de Janeiro and enjoys socialising and meeting new people.

FranceThe room was a bit noisy as it is right on the street and cars pass by. Just think about taking some earplugs and it’ll be just perfect!
The house has an incredible charm with a beautiful garden that Maria (the host) has a lot of pleasure to introduce. We loved spending time with her, to know more about her country, the brazilian habits and life in general :)

BelgiumWonderful house managed by Maria Teresa, a very lively host that participates in many cultural and social projects in the neighborhood of Santa Teresa. She knows a lot about the Bairro and its historical buildings. Her mum prepares a delicious breakfast, served in a beautiful dining room decorated with Portuguese tiles.

United KingdomThe host Maria-Teresa is a wonderful and welcoming person and is the reason you should stay here. You will meet someone who is welcoming travellers into her home and sharing her wisdom and hospitality with you, making this a unique place to stay. It is really like staying at a friend’s house so if you want a typical hotel then look elsewhere, but if you want a truly wonderful experience of Rio then book! As an extra the views and breakfast are amazing. You will be in the bohemian Santa Teresa area away from the main drag but close to Lapa (for samba/bars) and can get ubers into town (even if they take a little longer to come pick you up!) There are also two cute and friendly cats 🐱 If you are a light sleeper then i recommend to bring earplugs for cars going by!

Our stay was perfect! It felt like at home. Maria Teresa is a charming lady and we felt like visiting a friend. They helped us with everything and gave superb reccomendations. The breakfasts in the kitchen with a view to the hills made it very special. The location is lovely, with scenic views and lovely bars. It is a well kept unique oasis in the middle of Rio, where you can rest before or after visiting a noisy city. I would definitely stay there again!
