Set in tranquil surroundings with large landscaped grounds and a picturesque garden terrace with mountain views, Tongariro Crossing Lodge offers uniquely spacious rooms with historic character. The staff provided exceptional guidance so that we could take stunning views of the mountains during sunset. Very high quality breakfast. Overall, exceeded my expectations in this rather remote/resource limited (to a city person at least) location.
Ohakune
Part of a larger house, Frankie & Hugh's is a renovated, self-contained apartment located in Ohakune, just a 20-minute drive from the Turoa ski field on Mount Ruapehu. Our best accommodation in New Zealand. We got great coffee, fresh tomatoes and thyme straight from Marlene's garden. And speaking of them, Marlene and her husband are great hosts and deserve all the best. Great rooms, cozy living room, full kitchen and a fireplace heater.

National Park
The top apartment had a marvellous view of the Tongariro National Park - priceless. The space of the room was very comfortable and extremely clean. Very quiet at night. Close to restaurants and supermarket, a bonus in this area. Choose to stay in National Park rather than Whakapapa Village as you have options to either cook in the room or go out. The lovely staff was super helpful when I required a last-minute change to my reservation. I would stay here again and I recommend this place.

The manager was very helpful and gave us a lovely room. The fireplaces, kitchen and lounge were very comfy. Plus they have cute kittens.
It was the perfect size and setup for our weekend getaway. Had all the necessary bits like plates, bowls, cutlery, coffee making items, hairdryer, etc. there were lots of clean towels and the bed+ beddings were very comfortable.
It’s a very lovely property to stay in, the beds are super comfy, the lounge is spacious. I had really bad blisters from a hike and couldn’t do much but spending the time in the lodge was great.
five star service and premises
My partner and I stayed at the River Lodge during our Christmas/ summer holiday and it was EXCEPTIONAL. Cleanest room we have ever stayed in. The hosts are fantastic, great vibes all round! The included breakfast was delicious and we had all the amenities we needed. Well worth the price and experience away from a chain hotel. The setting is so green, relaxing and warm. We slept so well as it was so quiet. Highly recommend you stay here if you are planning to hike the Tongariro Alpine Crossing - Dani can organise a direct shuttle to/from the track for you.
Staff very pleasant, Rooms very comfortable,

Location awesome, close to the centre
The room was small but excellent, the shared kitchen and dinning was a bonus and very well equipt. The views from the room and the balcony of the lounge were breathtaking
