Hotel in Kusatsu
Located in Kusatsu, 29 miles from Jigokudani Monkey Park, La Vista Kusatsu Hills provides accommodations with a garden, free private parking, a shared lounge and a terrace. 100% best part of my stay was the view. very beautiful, even while relaxing in the onsen. room itself was comfortable and larger than expected. public hotel facilities were nice but limited (just the one top floor with a cafeteria/lounge and onsen). along with the public onsen there are four private onsen (no reservation required; you can just walk in and lock the door behind you). everything is clean and tidy. free food and snacks cycled in and out at the lounge. staff were very welcoming and accomodating. lovely food. i stayed two days in a row so was worried i might get the same menu, but the dinner menu was changed and i was provided an extra breakfast plate for my second breakfast to go with the standard buffet :) i read that it's not walkable, but the walk was rather nice, about ~8 minutes uphill walk from the bus terminal even with snow on the road. there is also a regular shuttle going both to the bus terminal and yubatake.

The hotel is very close to the station, so it made traveling easy. It also has car parking as well, so it was really convenient coming from other parts of Gunma. Though we chose not to have the breakfast because we wanted something local, having the option was relieving. Also being able to choose and non-smoking room and it actually smelled smoke-free was wonderful. I’ve stayed places before that we’re renovated from smoking to non, and the smell lingers in most places, but this hotel was excellent in that regard.
Kusatsu
Although we did not speak japanese the staff did their best to help us and even had one english speaker on staff, they also provide a service to have your luggage shipped to your next destination which was very helpful when we went from gunma to kyoto. The staff goes in your room while you're gone to clean up and make your bed, they would also bring us tea and treats which we did not pay extra for. The onsen they have is very clean and beutiful especially since it is open air.
Minakami
The location was excellent - deep in the mountains of Gunma. I chose this onsen because I wanted to stay in a remote location off the beaten path. The ambiance of the inn is incredible, and the baths are exceptional. This inn felt like a functioning inn from the past - it is rustic, shows signs of wear, and was cold inside in winter due to lack of insulation. It felt like an authentic inn from the past. That said, these rustic qualities are not for everyone.
Minakami
A bit lost in the Gunma mountains, i found a real ryokan with view on a river, amazing typical breakfast and dinner in a private space (to book), very friendly and attentive service and, last but not least, beautiful decorated baths (and really warm!). Just one hour from Tokyo to Jomo-Kogen and then the hotel bus 40’. Wheareas it was high season, the place felt not crowded and peaceful.
The staff were great… We had run out of Japanese currency and dollars were not being exchanged at any bank in GUNMA Staff Membrane Miss Ishimaru, Mr.Kobayashi and Ms.Thirini tried to help us a lot, they searched online and told us that we can only exchange our dollars in Tokyo, Miss Thirini spoke very good English so we had no problem explaining. Our experience with this hotel was great
Takasaki
The staff was wonderful. The owner and boss Yoshida-san were both great! The staff, whether the cook or the bartenders also made the stay worth. Definitely worth checking out if you're ever in Gunma, as it's the best hostel in Gunma by far!
Brilliant basic business hotel with excellent access to Gunma's ski resorts. Clean, efficiently operated and sharply priced. The staff did an excellent job with their English communication. Will use again as a base for future snow visits.
Not many options in Isesaki when renting a car to travel around the Gunma prefecture, but this was adequate. Parking was great, staff friendly but limited English (as expected). Washing machines were nice.
The staff were super friendly and very helpful. The multiple Onsens were fantastic, in particular the outdoor ones, as well as the dinner. The curtesy shuttle to and from the station was very helpful as we arrived and departed during snow fall.
Spacious room. great facilities
Beautiful property next to the river with a small waterfall. Onsen overlooks the river. The female owner takes a lot of pride in decorating the hotel and read story at night to the guests. I have no idea what the story is about but I enjoy listening to her pouring out her heart telling the story. The traditional breakfast and dinner were delicious. I highly recommend this hotel.
Staffs are very nice, friendly, and very service-minded. I lost my ring in the onsen and the next morning, when asked about it, they are able to return it to me.
Location onsen food absolutely loved it
Good english speaking staff member. The outdoor onsens (both mixed and non-mixed) were incredible.
The view of the hotel room was very good and the size of the room was better than most hotel in Japan. The Dinner offer quite good choices of foods and the free alcoholic drink for sure is great feature of this hotel.
LITERALLY THE BEST EXPERIENCE IN JAPAN. I am a Japanese American and have been to Japan several times and have stayed at different ryokans but this exceeded my expectations. First of all, the beauty of this hotel from the moment you walk in. I literally gasped when I walked in front of the ryokan. It is so breathtaking and you can see and feel the history of this ryokan. The lobby is on the 5th floor so when you first go, it's very confusing but after your first try you can basically navigate the ryokan very easily. The hotel staff were extremely professional and very friendly. They welcome you with hot tea and a cake and explain everything in detail. You are then escorted by a staff member to your room to explain everything. I got the bigger room and OMG the room was amazing. It was worth every penny! The private onsen with the beautiful balcony! We had a fully stocked complimentary fridge along with tea and coffee. There was a kotatsu in my room, a full living room, and two beds with the most fluffy comforter ever. We also received a Kaiseki style breakfast and dinner and the service was amazing there as well. The dinner was an 11 course dinner and it was amazing! I would have stayed there for a week if it wasn't for the price. I highly recommend!
Spectacular and beautiful. Older hotel, absolutely stunning. I love this place it’s great.
Breakfast is very good. Hot spring pool is very good. Room is clean. Location is good.
