Very interesting area for those interested in World War 1. The huge battlefield is a protected area with many monuments, museums, fortresses, and other testimonies of the war etc... Lots of paths for long walks. Verdun itself is rather ordinary but the centre along the river is quite nice. A visit to the citadel is a must, the new ride inside the tunnels is very good. Overall, in view of the 100th anniversary of the battle, most historical places have been renovated and improved. Ask for a Pass Lorraine if you intend to visit several places, it provides a good discount.
Some beautiful old buildings and Duke Stanislaus has left a major legacy. Art Nouveau buildings give Nancy a difference from other French towns. as with other areas in the Alsace- Lorraine region, we found the food served in brasseries, cafes and restaurants too heavy and "stodgy" for our taste, but then that's personal preferences. People were pleasant and helpful when asked to assist.
Its the old capital of Lorraine so is full of historic civic and ducal buildings. There are some very nice parks and some areas by the rivers and canals have been developed as leisure areas. There are plenty of shops and restaurants and the sort of facilities you would expect in a regional capital. I didn't get much chance to explore it but the surrounding countryside is low hills and woods and looked very attractive. I only had a few days in the city but I would love to go back.
The capital of Lorraine is perhaps overlooked by Anglophone tourists, but has an elegance, charm and interest that makes for a fascinating visit. The Place Stanislas is world-class (as the UN classification confirms) but there are also a number of other fine examples of late Medieval and 17/18th architecture and a remarkable collection of Art Nouveau buildings. The park of La Pepiniere is a lovely oasis, a stone's-throw from Stanislas. The little tourist train that leaves from Place de la Carriere is an ideal way to have a first sight of all these attractions, especially when the weather is as hot as when we visited. Finally, the cafes and restaurants in Place Stanislas offer excellent opportunities for refreshment as well as for static sightseeing and people watching.
Metz is an historic city, capital of Lorraine, which has changed ownership over the centuries, It is an open city much influenced by it's French and German past, but also neighbouring Luxembourg. It is also a city of gently rolling hills, enough to give panoramic views, but not too difficult to walk around. The cathedral is magnificent, one of many excellent buildings. Open air dining was notable in a number of streets / places, during the Indian summer, I was there mid September, but the temperatures were more like July/August. Metz is also convenient for visiting other town inLorraine. I made a day trip to Verdun, another lovely, yet historic place.
The focal point of Nancy has to be Place Stanislas, with the Town Hall, the Opera, and the hotel where we stayed! We were lucky enough to be there on the first weekend of a flower festival in the square, celebrating 250 years of the Duchy of Lorraine being joined to France.
Have been to Metz several times and is a superb city. People there are extremely nice, helpful and happy to assist you in English, if you cant master your French. You have something new to see/do every time. The train station is a tourist sight in it's own right with some very intricate exterior design. The Cathedral is particularly impressive and worthwhile. However, be aware there are "beggars" in this area, which I strongly suspect don't earn their living through only begging. The Tourist Information Centre (very close to the Cathedral) is very modern, but could be improved by having toilets for use by the public (as there are none in the Cathedral either). The Centre Pompidou-Metz is quite quirky and for art aficionados. Big downside for Metz visitors is the expensive parking (and they issue penalties on regular basis), but a plus is that everything in the old town is close by so doable on foot. City is OK for navigating with a wheelchair/baby buggy - most streets are even pavement. Overall, I'd happily return there again and I suggest, when you do, make sure to eat a quiche Lorraine there, as Metz is the Lorraine region's capital :)
The fine arts museum, the Museum of Lorraine and the Museum Ecole de Nancy were all super interesting! The people on the street were friendly and we had several stop to offer us help when they saw us looking at our map. Walking around to find the remaining examples of the Art Nouveau houses and public buildings was a lot of fun and there is a selection of truly gourmet restaurants.
Village houses are in the style of Lorraine, but the ambience is immeasurably improved by virtue of the fact that there is a lot of money about, and the houses, gardens and surprising amenities (including lawned car park, children's playground, park) are beautifully kept. Village stands on a butte on the edge of the Argonne forest, with extensive views over the countryside. Not far from the A4 motorway and the LGV Gare de Meuse/lorraine. Extremely tranquil, scenic location. Main street finishes at the end of the village, so no traffic. Easy parking.
Saint-Avold
This was a nicely furnished apartment. We felt safe walking around at night when going "home." Very good restaurants in the neighborhood. It is very close to the Lorraine American Military Cemetery which is why we were there. Parking in a parking structure around the corner so you didn't have to deal with parking on the street. It is on the 3rd floor by European numbering (The ground floor is zero.) In the USA it would be 4th floor of a walk-up so if you don't do stairs well, this won't work for you.
Fabulously located and stylishly decorated, the Grand Hotel Metz is perfect for a stay in the city. We loved the room decoration and the courtyard with its glass roof. Breakfast was exceptional and included Quiche Lorraine, Plum Tart and freshly prepared Mirabelle plums from the region. A short walk from Metz Cathedral, the Covered Market and pedestrian shopping streets.
The place of the hotel was amazing. If you plan to go to the zoo, it is right in front of the entry ! Plus is has multiple restaurants and fast foods in the same streets.
Characterful and beautiful accommodation Excellent location , slightly remote but stunning views Exceptional food. Michelan star quality with outstanding presentation and amazing value 10 courses for 85 euros Hidden gem and highly recommend
Good location clean and comfortable, bathroom is nice
Closeness to center, brand new rooms, excellent air con and lovely bathrooms, excellent breakfast with lots of local specialities
New well decorated and maintained. Excellent breakfast
Great Room Great breakfast Nice staff
Friendly staff, lovely rooms, goid breakfast buffet . Goid parking
Food, staff, spa—all were lovely and memorable!
On arrival we were greeted warmly and told we had been upgraded to a larger room, which was a very unexpected and very welcome treat. We were asked if we'd be using the swimming pool and then given some larger towels . We were escorted to our room and helped with our luggage. The room was large with a comfortable sofa and a short walk to the large and very comfortable bed. The hotel's indoor swimming pool was a good size, clean and open from 09:00 to 20:00. The Buffet-Breakfast" was as expected with a good choice of cold meats. cheeses and pastries. It was taken in a very light and airy dinning room and the coffee was very good. The hotel is within easy walking distance of the town and the spa. We would very happily return to stay here.
