Great little town with lots of local life. Lots of trips to do both on boats and land. Beautiful beaches with tonnes of Galapagos wildlife. Variety of restaurants & cafes. Very safe to walk around day and night on your own.
After all the fuss, rules and regulations, disinfecting airoplane lockers etc we were shocked at how dirty Puerto Ayora was. Slightly hypocritical of the equadorians. The Main Street resembled a lower price Mediterranean holiday resort and walk into back streets and they are scruffy, dirty and full of rubbish. Considering you pay an extra 120 dollars per person for the privelage of visiting the islands the place should be spotless. Rubbish was a recurring theme on Santa Cruz but our gut feeling was that this was locals not tourists. People who visit the Galapagos are not the sort to leave rubbish.
Be sure to have an itinerary for your stay in the Galapagos Islands. If you want to see the Red & Blue Boobie birds they are only on 2 islands--Genevosa & Espanola, both of which you will have to spend the night. I took a 5 day cruise, book it at the Travel Agency next to Café Hernan, they go to Genevosa, and other islands & you will see all of the birds. Best place to eat in Puerto Ayora is Galapagos Deli just off of Baltra street. They have homemade ice cream & bread, with the best prices in town. They have sandwiches, pizza, fish, and great ice cream, down a side street from Baltra (ask a local for directions). Another good place to eat is the Tropic Bird on Charles Darwin street. You cannot rent a car, scooter/motorcycle, or quad, so the only way to get around the island is walking, rent a bicycle, or taxi. A taxi anywhere in town is $1.50 one way day or night. A good place to get up very close to the large tortoises is Rancho Primiera, take a taxi. At Charles Darwin Station the turtles are in an open pen so you can take pictures, but cannot get real close to them. A good place to buy $25.00 ferry tickets is at Gladel around the corner from the church and between the supermarket. Also you can see sea lions at the harbor and also at the fish market in Puerto Ayora. Be sure to allow enough time to see all of the islands you wanted to see--I would recommend 2 weeks minimum.
It's a small township and easy to get around. The wharf is busy and well organised. Plenty of restaurants and tourist shops. I did the 360 tour and Kicker Rock was absolutely incredible snorkelling - this made my trip! Also the day trip to Espanola was amazing. Galapagos is expensive though and you need to pay for everything in cash.
Beautiful place. Just be careful with cab drivers and locals in general, they don't have respect for tourists and would try to overcharge. Speculation is part of the modus operandi in Galapagos. I lost my cell phone in Isabela, someone named Jose Alvarez found it. He answered my call once and said he would talk to me at night to make arrangements of return. That was it. He never answered my calls again.
Loved San Cristobal, stayed on Santa Cruz and Isabela (you have to pay an additional $10 when you arrive on Isobela which feels cheeky given the $100 you pay when arriving to the Galapagos) but San Cristobal was by far my favourite. It was the quietest island we stayed on and was the most relaxed and easy to go off and do things on your own which I really enjoyed. We hired snorkels and a short wetsuit for $10 and went snorkelling on our own and saw loads of fish, a sting ray, turtles and swam with baby sea lions. Overall was an amazing experience. We didn't do a tour as we snorkelled on our own but I'm sure that they're good and our hostess told us that Española is beautiful. I stayed in Cattaleya based on a recommendation from my uncle and would recommend it to anyone planning a trip to San Cristobal. We ate twice in galapagos dreams -I'd recommend the Camarones and the daiquiris. Overall was well worth the trip!!
As center of the Galapagos tourism industry it is hard to bypass this town. Almost everything is within walking distance and cabs are cheap. The food street is a feast as is street food. Just wished tour operators would except credit cards and prices were more in line with what's being offered.
Lovely 'real' town and the tourist areas are tasteful enough not to spoil it. Very much a village community feel to it. Everywhere is very safe and walkable. Wonderful base for a land based Galapagos trip. Easy to take trips out to other islands and great places to eat. Lots of accommodation, and much to amuse spotting fish off the pier, sea lions sleeping on benches, Darwin Centre with the tortoises and information, beautiful Tortuga Bay a short walk. Best restaurant in town is Anker in the town. Other very good restaurants on the waterfront. Loved our six day stay here and we were so pleased we didn't spend a fortune on a cruise. Much better and cheaper to do day trips.
Easy access to the Galapagos beach and for trips to other islands Puerto agora not very big obviously geared at tourism taxis so very cheap was not expecting 120dallers in total to get on island towards the up keep of the island
A beautiful port, with lots of choice for dinner and drinks. 2 cocktails for $10. Had lovely food at Rustica restaurant. Locals all very friendly. We stayed for 3 nights which was perfect. Plenty of tour shops with boat tours around the island or to other islands. We did the 360 boat tour with SUPGalapagos Tours for $140 and $20 another day for a few hours of paddle boarding to Playa Mann to watch the sunset. So worth it! Beaches are beautiful- recommend Playa Mann and Playa Pubta Carola. Taxis are everywhere and really cheap. Only $1 or $2 to the beaches. Or you can walk. Places to do laundry for cheap. Most places have WiFi, although not always great. Sea lions are amazing and so entertaining! Missed them when we were staying back on Santa Cruz!
Puerto Ayora
The hotel is located very close to Santa Cruz pier/ city center. And downstairs they have one coffee shop and one Ecuadorian resto, which of great taste/ quality. The owner Juan Carlos, has been helping me arranging my activities in Galapagos, helping me with laundry as well as allow me to stay until 3pm because I have late afternoon ship. They really make sure your stay is as comfortable as possible. From the common room you can also see the turquoise water of Santa Cruz and the pier It is also good value for money.
Puerto Villamil
Excellent Apartment Hotel in Isabela, our host Nancy was attentive and communicated with us during our entire stay, she was willing to help us with anything. The hotel seems brand new! The kitchen, with coffee maker, is a really nice to have, especially if you plan on a more extended stay. Drinking water was provided and much appreciated. The hotel is a 7-10min easy walk from downtown/beach, little "tienda" market next door. Our favorite stay in Galapagos, would not hesitate to stay here again! Thank you!
This hostel is in a perfect location just off of Av. Charles Darwin where you can find restaurants, shops and an ATM. It was a 5 minute walk from the town centre and 10 mins from the ferry port. We had a spacious apartment with excellent AC and a full kitchen. The staff provided fresh towels daily which was nice also. The breakfast was tasty and overall the staff were very friendly and helpful throughout our stay. We would definitely recommend this place to anyone looking to see the Galapagos.
Torre Mar is located near plenty of shops and restaurants. The apartments were spacious and beds were comfortable. When one of the TV's wasn't working right, it was replaced with a new one the next day. Donna and John, the owners, were very helpful in accommodating us and provided us with helpful information on all things Galapagos, as it was our first time on the island. Both speak English which made communication so much easier. We would definitely stay there again.
Puerto Baquerizo Moreno
Super clean and quiet- I am allergic to mold so I was worried if the AC and the room had mold (as this is quite common in islands). I was in fact in another hotel the night before and I had to change the room because of this. However, Hotel Isla Galapagos is super clean and neat so I did not have any problem and the room was quiet too. I am so happy that I chose this place and I highly recommend this to anyone looking for an affordable and clean hotel room in San cristobal.
Puerto Villamil
By far our favourite hotel of all four that we stayed at on Galapagos! Friendly, helpful, welcoming reception staff that booked our tours of Isabela at a great price and were always there when we needed them. The clean, comfortable, big room with a modern bathroom was a pleasure. The large breakfast offered some variety (unusual for Ecuador). The pool is a cool addition and nice to chill around. Close enough to all the restaurants, the beach and the centre.
Beautiful, spacious and very comfortable rooms with attention to detail we did not see at other hotels on the islands, e.g., different firmness pillows to choose from, lamps on both sides of the bed, and a drying rack on the balcony to hang wet swimsuits and such. The staff is highly professional and very friendly. Liz and Joseline went above and beyond to make our stay at the hotel and in the Galapagos the best.
Hotel Albemarle is a great hotel and I can't recommend it enough. Tim the owner, a New Zealander, is a cool dude and the hotel staff is great and highly attentive. Juliette in particular helped me with every aspect of my trip, from booking dinners and activities as well as making me feel welcome as a solo traveler. I had a great time, and look forward to returning and exploring more of the Galapagos Islands :)
The rooms are nice and clean, large, comfortable, and modern. Hotel about a 5 min walk to the main street by the harbour where all the restaurants are. Staff are pleasant, helpful and speak English. They were great in arranging a very reasonably priced taxi tour of the Highlands for us : ) Also, can fill up water bottles with purified water which, given the need to stay hydrated in the Galapagos, was appreciated.
Absolutely fine hotel. Very nice and engaged staff. Good location, very close to the port but quiet at the same time. The restaurant in the hotel is not fancy, but food was very good. The hotel is maybe a liitle bit simple, but you are coming to Galapagos for watching the nature, not hotel luxury! Anyway, based on my observations in the town, I think this is one of the best hotels in Puerto Ayora.
The breakfast was very good. It was typical of what we got during our time in Ecuador. Coffee, fresh juice, fresh fruit, scrambled eggs with toast, butter and jam. It's the Galapagos so we read from other travelers that sometimes ants and bugs happen to be in the rooms. We didn't get bit or anything but having that expectation is helpful. Eduardo is a great host and a fascinating person.
Spoiled. Totally spoiled by Blu Galapagos. Everything was over the top perfection. The hotel is on the waterfront near the Charles Darwin Research Center and just enough on the edge of town that you feel isolated yet still within a five minute walk to the heart of this sweet port town. We stayed in the Darwin Suite which is primo for celebrating a loved one or yourself. I’ll be back for sure.
Puerto Ayora
it’s a smal nice guesthouse very good located . Yogo the owner with his mom are very friendly . I came with no plans and he helps me organizing my whole trip here in Galapagos and Ecuador. He compared different options is knowledgeable about whole Ecuador and was really interested to find the best solution . So highly recommend his beautiful Guesthouse and his Travel agency, the Darwin path.
We enjoyed our stay at the Hotel Volcano. The hotel was very cozy, located in the center of Puerto Villamil. We arrived in the morning before the official check in. David welcomed us with a nice fruity drink and our room was ready within 10 minutes. He was very accommodating and helpful. Isabela is a beautiful island, don't miss it on your way to the Galapagos
Puerto Ayora
Location, location, location. We had an ocean view room with a little shared balcony. Fell asleep to the sounds of waves (and sea lions). Doesn't get any better than that! Just a short stroll away from the town. Was able to prepay with a credit card (which was an unexpected nice surprise since not too many businesses take credit cards in the Galapagos).
The location was as good as it gets. The staff was amazing. The food was great. The breakfasts were "OK". The biggest drawback was the internet. It was basically useless. We were told that it is the same all over the Galapagos. However, we did find a hotel that the internet was consistently excellent. If wifi is not important this is a great choice.
Puerto Ayora
The room and its bathroom were clean and pretty big. We slept very well since the bed was comfortable and the AC cooled the room to pleasant temperature. Moreover, this hostel had the fastest Wifi of all the places we stayed at in the Galapagos Islands. Lastly, the owner is super nice and he gave us lots of good recommendations.
El Descanso del Guia was a wonderful hotel for our Galapagos vacation. Clean, comfortable room with wifi, a great breakfast, and amazing staff. Oscar made our experience even better. He is so helpful and courteous. He is a true professional and the best part of our hotel experience. Thank you, Oscar!
Puerto Ayora
everything, the room is spacious as has many hangers which is important. the staff is the strongest point of the hostel - they will help you with planning your entire stay in the Galapagos, and help you book everything. I highly recommend using their assistance, especially for the ferry tickets.
I ate 3 meals at the hotel all delicious. Every single employee at the hotel was wonderful however the front desk person went above and beyond when i could not figure out which port my Galapagos cruise left from. Thank you so very much i would definitely recommend and would love to return!!!
