Although the room was a little smaller than I had imagined, the rest of the pension was excellent. The shower was spacious and equipped with soap dispensers, the bed was comfortable and large, and there was clean water in the room upon check-in to quench a thirst. I also should mention local restaurant - the chef is a master of his craft. We had lunch and dinner with great pleasure, same as breakfast next day. Local beer is also worth noting for its excellent quality. In addition, as a bicycle tourist, I would like to mention the willingness of the staff to help us with the storage of our luggage while we visited the local Wörlitzer Park on the other day.

The house is rare and classy find with squeaking stairs, paintings and candelabras with old clock waiting at the end of corridor. Rooms are all different, but spacious. Breakfast in room #14 with huge window opening to the courtyard is a really luxurious start of the day.

Great atmosphere, super chilled and relaxed, restaurant was similar to an American lodge (but way cooler). Staff were so kind and accomodating and were great Ambassador's for Germany. Would definitely stay again. Great for those on the Harzer Hexensteig.

1.5 hours west of Berlin on a smart efficient regional train is Magdeburg. The capital city of the German state of Saxony-Anhalt on the Elbe River. Founded by Charlemagne in 805, this became one of the most important medieval cities of Europe and resting place of Emperor Otto I, the first Holy Roman Emperor. Around a thousand years later this historic city was all but destroyed in one night in January 1945 by the RAF during WW2. By July that year it was in the hands of the Red Army and subsequently part of the hardline communist German Democratic Republic until German reunification in 1990. So the coexistence of buildings we see today create a unique and rather visionary cityscape. A few are impeccably restored or completely reconstructed. Others were built under the East German regime in a severe, uncompromising modernist style, while the more recent buildings are striking in their boldness and innovative approaches to architecture.
Loved wandering around the cobbled streets, Quedlinburg is not so big as to get lost easily. Some lovely parks to just sit and relax and enjoy a sandwich or 2 and natter to the friendly people, somehow we understood each other. Surprisingly I did not meet or hear many English voices, many were German tourists. A must, is to walk the climb to the Castle. The panoramic view is breath-taking as well as a look inside the Castle museum Schlossmuseum. I also visited the Cloister of St Mary on the Munzenburg. I found a small bar/café called Moms Burgers in a little street on the left side if you were facing the Town Hall (Rathouse), cheap and tasty Burgers and Soups. Excellent English spoken there. Buses were free as a tourist in the surrounding area for your duration if you stayed in a B&B, Hotel....I used it like a hop on and hop off ticket but I did need to look at the timetables carefully as most only ran 1 an hour or less. Whilst using Quedlinburg as a base, I managed to visit Aschersleben (bus ticket free) the oldest town in Saxony-Anhalt. A little more modern but there is still the Historical Wall and City Fortifications to look at and admire, also the parks and Zoo. I also went to the town Goslar (no bus ran there so went by train), surrounded by wooded forest pine trees. What would I avoid on another trip there, hard to say but I think high heeled shoes are a no no.
