Not only that, but staying here means you are helping out the local indigenous women with work experience, who are, if possible, kinder and more genuinely friendly than Thai people. The half day elephant walk was a treat, the guides and mahouts are friendly and knowledgeable - bring good walking shoes and bug spray. The highlight is the elephant breakfast! Staying at Chai Lai Orchid was a once in a lifetime experience for a very reasonable price. A few notes, the riverfront bungalows are a bit of a distance from the mountain view ones. They have their own restaurant with the same menu. This is just a neutral comment, neither is better, it's up to you what you want (view or riverfront - we were by the river which offers a nice cool down at the end of the day!). Secondly, take the hotel's advice and hire one of their drivers if you want a private car. 95% of the drive is fine, but the last 5% you definitely need someone with local knowledge. Our driver, Kae, was amazing and the price was reasonable. Third, if you're worried about the elephants' welfare, don't. This place is a million times better than many of the locations in Thailand. The elephants are well treated, well fed, get to do lots of roaming, grazing, and swimming (as opposed to being tied up in the sun all day, which is something I personally witnessed elsewhere) - the hotel website has an excellent discussion on elephant treatment, and it's clear they care for the elephants' well being. 5 stars all around, don't even think twice about booking, you won't regret it! Also, not sure how full they are regularly, but the rest of the country is struggling with booking during covid, and this place was full when we were there, so if you have the opportunity to book, do it!

The weather ruined my original plans to go to the summit but staying here with the rain felt very cozy anf there was still a view to enjoy despite the clouds

The owner is very considerate and flexible. I had to leave early for an appointment. She arranged the breakfast for me earlier and called the taxi for me because it was raining at the exact time after I finished eating. The breakfast was amazing. The experience I had for the price I paid was very price worthy.
