Food was provided as well. The village of Melo is quiet, the people friendly. There was historic buildings and it was the former home of a famous Portuguese writer. The host had little English and we had little Portuguese, but we were able to communicate through hand signals and also by text, as our phones translated the texts. She also spoke French. A washing machine was at the apartment, though no drier, but a drying rack was provided, which worked well to dry our clothes.

She was also very patient with us learning Portuguese! Melo is an interesting little historic town and has great access to many points of interest across Serra do Estella.

Pedro greats you with a warm welcome to his Bed and Breakfast which was first run by his grandparents in this beautifully maintained and restored 120 year old building. The building and it’s out buildings tell the story of the neighborhood if take the time to ask questiones. The beautiful “forno” in the side yard was shared by the neighbors on bread day- but now his bread is delivered fresh with the honk of a horn. Pedro has maintained a lot of the antique furniture and it is a privilege to use it. It appears that he serves the wonderful typical Portuguese breakfast with his grandmothers dishes. Note- this breakfast is typical for the types of foods provided, but atypical for the variety of cheeses, breads, sweets and cereals that he offers. The location is country side, a short drive out of Seia where you are greeted by the sheep that stay nearby at night. If you like to experience the history and culture of Portugal, appreciate beautiful landscaping and a warm personality- choose Pedro’s. If you like cookie cutter lodging and standard food- you need to go somewhere else.
