We had a suite with the private onsen which was fantastic. So peaceful, relaxing and romantic. It was expensive at nearly 70,000 yen (approx $700 AUD) per night and we stayed two nights, but the experience was totally worth it. If you can, definitely get this room. The little town of Yamanakaonsen is only about a 15 minute walk and has a convenience store and other gift shops. We found a lovely spot down by the river.
The staff were all excellent, as I have found in all Japanese hotels, but I want to make a special mention about a young Indonesian lady (Sushi) who waited on our table. She explained the extensive menu in Japanese to my Japanese wife and again in English to me. Her bubbly personality was a delight. The food was outstanding, top quality and plentiful. Overall one of the best hotel experiences I’ve had. The onsen in your room overlooking the river and forest was just perfect.

very nice room and lovely staff. they have a private onsen and are located in a very nice area close to most of the gardens and museums. would definitely recommend
Very clean, spacious room, amazing onsen, everything very clean!
I really recommend staying in this ryokan. Staff is doing everything to make you feel like home. Walking distance to main attractions in the city. You can take a bus or walk to the station for about 20 minutes. Bathing in onsen and sleeping on futon was a unique experience. Breakfast was very delicious, everything was fresh.
This is a historic Ryokan (an old Samurai residence) which is extremely spacious and well designed. The beds are very comfortable and the rooms were immaculately cleaned. It has all the amenities you could need for your trip and the onsen bath tub is a highlight. It is also in a good area - about a 15 min walk to the station and a 20 mins walk to the historic districts. The staff are very friendly and accommodating and happy to give you recommendations. There is free tea and coffee for guests staying at the Ryokan.
The room is so comfy and clean. We love it that the hotel provide a kettle and a set of Japanese tea cups for us to make Japanese tea in the room. But what we like the most is the onsen, a Japanese hot spring pool. We went there every single night during our stay. It was a nice treat after a long walk from the sightseeing. The staff at the reception were also very helpful. She helped us make a reservation for us to eat at this very fine tempura restaurant in the Higashi Chaya district since we can’t speak Japanese.
1. Hot Spring is excellent. With outdoor hotspring is an unexpected bonus. It also give u extra happiness to provide you free ice-cream, and refreshment of a hot soup noddle (also free of charge). 2. The massage service is very good, in good price. 3. Extremely comfortable bed. 4. Very clean room and all facilities. 5. Warm and polite staffs. 6.Good location of 3 min walk to JR station/ bus station. 7. Good security. 8. Hotel Guests are goid as well.
Everything was very clean and tidy. The owner was too kind and ready to help. She took me to the train station twice during my stay. I liked the onsen and the room was also comfortable. I liked also the traditional setting or the ryokan.
The location was ideal. The room was comfortable well provided with snacks, fruits and drinks. It had a great river view, and it was relaxing hearing the river water flowing. The attached open air onsen was really great and allowed us to soak in the warm water from the hot spring and enjoying the view of the river and trees. Very relaxing. Dinners and breakfast were provided and very elaborate and well done; it was very good. And thanks for the bento set which was thoughtfully packed for us when we checked out to go to the airport.
Motoyu Ishiya is a slice of the past waiting for you to experience it. The property carried with it the atmosphere of older Japanese times be it the location, the polite formality of the staff or then classic architecture of the Ryokan. The room experienced had a garden view which in the recent snow had magnificent views. the dark sulphurous waters of the Ibsen (hot spring) were refreshing and nicely hot the food was plentiful and delicious.
