Awarded by TripAdvisor Travelers' Choice in 2015, Wanosato offers luxurious Japanese-style ryokan stay in a 160-year-old quaint Gassho-zukuri thatched-roof house, nestled in the tranquil woods. It features a bedrock and a cypress public hot spring bath, where guests can unwind with mountain views. The property is a 20-minute complimentary shuttle ride from JR Takayama Station. Free WiFi is available in all rooms and lobby area. Everything! My husband and I can’t thank the team of Wanosato enough. It was such an amazing experience and they were so kind, gentle and thoughtful. One of the highlights - if not THE highlight - of our trip.
Takayama
Reopened after renovation in 2022, Auberge Hidanomori is situated in quiet hills, a 10-minute shuttle ride from JR Takayama Station. The property offers free WiFi access in rooms and in public areas including the shared TV lounge and the terrace. This place and the whole team were exceptional. The setting, the interior design, the nice beds, the onsen- like bathroom experience all adds up to a unique atmosphere. The staff is amazing , speak English well, and always ready to help or to drive us to takayama station (10 minutes drive). And i saved the best for last : the food is amazing. Toshi the owner is a trained chef and worked many years in Italy. This results in Michelin star quality food, including home made bread. The value for money -7000 yen for 5 course dinner- is really good (don't bother trying to go into the city, this is probably better anyway). We just found the wine pairing very interesting, but a bit pricey (13000 yen per person). But then again, lots of high quality imported wines served with a lot of passion. Absolutely recommend this place if you want to visit takayama. Just to be able to experience the best of auberge, book at least 2 nights.

Elegantly furnished Japanese style room with fine decoration. Cool to have hot spring water available in bathroom. The dinner and breakfast served are superb. Nice public onsen facilities. Overall experience is beyond expectation.
Location was great as it was just a few minutes from the Nohi Bus Terminal, also close to the JR station. Room modern and very clean, bed comfortable. Staff very friendly and helpful. Hot spring facilities were great. We also paid a small fee to rent bicycles. Takayama old town is only 12 minutes walk away. We also rode the bicycles there in the evening. Would highly recommend this hotel.
This Ryokan was amazing, your own private onsen with views of the mountains and river. The breakfast and dinner were delicious. The staff were so nice and very accommodating.
We loved this family ryokan. So close to all the major sights and shops. We l9ved the private onsen and our room had its own ensuite. The meals were an absolute highlight and Sumiko -San was an absolute delight. We hope we can come back soon as Takayama has been one of our favourite towns so far.
This Ryokan has a “luxury” and modern feel to it. It could easily be branded as Aman or a Rosewood Hotel since the upkeep and products / amenities used are of very high quality. The room was incredible and very tastefully designed; a mix between dark and light wood. Beds were super comfy, amazing Yukatas to wear around the hotel. Small private onsen and 2 semi private onsen with great Mountain View. Dinner and breakfast were incredible and only high quality and seasonal ingredients were used.
Lovely traditional Ryokan with indoor onsen and great meals. The family, or "staffs" that runs the place is warm and welcoming.
The hot springs were amazing! You can even get two private onsen for free
The hot springs and views of the mountains are amazing - even better than they look in the pictures, and it's great that you can book (for no extra charge) the private Onsen upon arrival. This was also lovely and spacious. The dinner was delicious and exceeded expectations. Staff were helpful and provided breakfast for us half an hour earlier than their normal service. The property is straightforward to get to via a direct bus from Takayama. Getting to Kamikochi the next morning also took less than an hour via bus.
Very spacious and clean for a traditional ryokan, while still very comfy. The futons were good and not back breaking, heating worked perfectly. Of course the hot springs are lovely, very clean and pleasant.
