When I couldn't book the airport shuttle because I could not speak Japanese well, the staff called them on my behalf and made sure that The room is very nice and clean. It's just a walk away from other onsen. You can 'rent' coat, boots, and towels for free if you want to walk outside and go to other onsen.

This is the first ryokan I have ever gone to, and it was wonderful. The staff were very nice, including the gardener who I had met and talked with a few times. The breakfasts had a great variety, and were different every day, with a mix of Western and Japanese items available. The onsen was fun to walk to, since a bridge connects the main building and the onsen building. This was also my first onsen experience, and there are very informative instructions on how to use the facilities properly. It set me up for success at every other bath I ended up going to on my trip, and I'm really grateful. Would highly recommend going during the winter, to enjoy very pretty snowfall and snowy mountain views. I want to return during the spring or summer to enjoy the outdoor art village activities as well!!

Outdoor onsen was amazing. Location was great. It’s a big hotel but very traditional Japanese. Other first rate onsens nearby. Half board was very good (nowhere else to eat nearby). Shinkansen stops at Tazawako close by so easy to access. Very little English spoken but staff went out of their way to be helpful.
