Obviously being in the heart of the winelands, wine farm visits are a daily activity. Selecting the right place to eat can be tricky, some very up market and expensive places, some very quick, snack and go places, the trick is to find the middle ground and filter out what you don't want.
Traffic cameras are EVERYWHERE, drive the speed limit, coming from Joburg this will need to be a conscious change. A traffic fine can ruin a trip.
Navigating Stellies is effortless, well indicated signage and it helps that everyone drives ridiculously slow.
Avoid main roads, for no reason, other than to take in the fantastic views and the experience of local life in the area, explore as far as possible, you wont get lost.
Oh, and try the scooters that are randomly scattered around town, looks weird but works great. Tap and go, awesome way to "feel" the town

This is a grand old house that is best described as well lived in. Needs a bit of updating. The pool needs some attention. Not at all inviting. I don’t understand why they don’t just get an expert in to give it a thorough clean without doing it themselves.
The staff are wonderful.
If you want to stay in paradise. it is a luxury hotel, the rooms are very well decorated, first-rate service, excellent quality products, as well as wonderful wines. It is impeccable. I have nothing to say against this hotel, everything was perfect. We chose to stay at the hotel for the second time and enjoyed the visit to the winery, wine tasting and dinner with wonderful meat at the Taphuis restaurant. The breakfast is excellent with a welcome sparkling wine and also first-class service with very attentive people and delicious dishes.
The hotel was modern and sleek.
The facilities of the hotel are great. We had a wine tasting included and there was a discount on massages.
We also played golf at the range which was included.
The gym and pool have everything one needs and is very clean. Our room was cleaned twice a day.
Our highlight was the wine tasting as the staff there was very knowledgeable and friendly.
We also loved the screening room, which we got to book for a night to watch a movie.
A very charming, boutique hotel in Stellenbosch, beautifully designed. Welcoming and hospitable staff who make sure you are well looked after. Enjoyed having breakfast on the lovely terrace, which was delicious and offered everything you could want, traditional English, continental, eggs Benedict, pancakes, fruit etc. I'm sad I didn't have more time to enjoy the property and make more use of the spa and treatments.
A gorgeous, historic hotel in an exceptional, central location in the most attractive part of Stellenbosch. Most helpful owner and hotel staff so friendly and efficient. Despite being historic, the hotel has every mod con discreetly installed, the room and bathroom spacious and immaculate. Lots of extras - rusks, chocolates and sherry and a cooked breakfast! Safe, free parking.
The property is handy for Stellenbosch and surrounding areas. There is plenty of parking - although some way from the premises. Our room was comfortable and spacious enough. A highlight was the restaurant. Our evening meal was excellent as was breakfast. We had stayed in a number of other excellent hotels over that period - and The Devon Valley food shone above the others.
A beautiful hotel in perfect location in the middle of Stellenbosch. Our room was amazing, we had a balcony too. All the facilities were wonderful - the pool, the bar area and the breakfast room. We were especially impressed by the wonderfully helpful and generous staff who went out of their way to give us recommendations and help us with all aspects of our stay.
This property is perfectly situated for a variety of visitors to Stellenbosch - families visiting students or attending graduations; friends enjoying a getaway; or couples having a romantic weekend. It is suited for short stays with excellent restaurants in walking distance or longer stays with great cooking facilities and indoor and outdoor relaxation areas.
One of the best hotels we have stayed in for a very long time. The room was spacious, the bed was comfortable, the staff were lovely, the facilities were excellent and the breakfast was delicious! Highly recommend and will definitely book again if we make our way through Stellenbosch again. Could not fault anything! Thank you for a wonderful stay!
Warm greeting on arrival, great location for either Stellenbosch or nearby wine farms (needed a place to stay after a wedding at Tokara) in a quiet part of town. Was nice to have dedicated parking available off-street (though not behind a gate so don't leave anything valuable in the car). Enjoyed the Full English breakfast.
Cute little hotel in Stellenbosch. Comfortable, clean and walking distance from a bunch of restaurants. Breakfast is good, mostly baked goods and coffee/tea. It got kind of crowded a few days but in general it wasnt too bad. Staff is great as well, very helpful. Also just a 20 min uber to cape town (less than 10 dollars).
The big plus of the spier hotel is that it is on their own wine farm. You can go on picnics, go to the restaurants, do wine tasting, go swimming, go to the spa, there is an abundance of activities to do. Plus the close proximity to stellenbosch adds to the list of todos.
One of my favourite place to stay in Stellenbosch. I loved everything about this hotel. My room was really nice and a view from the balcony was breathing. All the services in the hotel were very professional.
The hotel has a wonderful, fabulous garden and has a superb view on the hills of Stellenbosch.
Hotel staff was very friendly and they did everything possible to make our stay comfortable.
Very modern. Loved the large bed (not like most hotels with small double beds)
Good location - while not in the heart of stellenbosch, it’s only a couple of minutes walk
It is a historic building in the best location of. Stellenbosch. The hotel is great and the staff has managed to made my stay great. The place is super clean!!
