The location is great. The hotel and onsen were very clean and the staff were lovely. The free happy hour and area for guests to chill was amazing. The only downside was the bed was not to our taste- ie too hard. But this is a Japanese thing….

We spent 5 days in Takayama as part of a longer Japan trip and loved it. Beautiful area with lots of things to do and explore especially if you like nature (mountain) walks. We also like Takayama city. Its like a small version of Tokyo.

Beautiful town, providing an opportunity to experience both...
Beautiful town, providing an opportunity to experience both Japan’s traditional architecture and alpine forests. We visited in summer, and were delighted that Takayama was about 7 degrees cooler than the big cities we’d been visiting, and pleasantly cool in the evenings. We spent one day exploring the downtown and local museums, and a second visiting the folk village and completing a city walk through Takayama’s mountain park and temples/shrines. Wished we’d had 1-2 more days to visit more nearby towns/ hiking trails/ ropeways. Best was walking around town after dark, when the throngs of visitors had abated, the historic architecture could be viewed quietly in moonlight, and activities geared more to local residents redefined our experience of the city.

The city is beautiful and worth a visit. The historic buildings, streets and temples make great sight-seeing. We dined well, especially on recommendation of the lovely owner of a shop we stopped in for local wood crafts. We loved the bridges and statues. Don't miss the morning markets and takoyaki!

Cute town with a great morning market that is a must-see-and-visit. The downtown shopping area is kept in the traditional wooden style, making it look very attractive and 'original', although modernized. The morning market has a lot of food and stall choices, and the shopping street loads of interesting shops, from local food to various art and of course wood carving (Takayama's specialty). Nice restaurants serving the always excellent Japanese food (whatever choice you want) are not far away, and if you prefer a calm modern coffee shop, you'll also find it there. Of course you must visit the Shirakawa-go village, which is stunningly beautiful and HAS to be part of your itinerary!

Loved the peace and quiet after spending time in busy Tokyo.
Loved the peace and quiet after spending time in busy Tokyo. The morning markets and the Old Town were relaxing to stroll through and the locals were very helpful. We would definitely stay here again. Such a beautiful historical town.
I cannot rate this place high enough. Has it's own onsen; rooms of the high standard you always get here; walking distance from the station; very central to the shops and markets. Staff recommended a bar for a quiet drink and "Tonio" turned out to be a great little watering hole. Tell the owner you're a Metallica fan and you've made a friend. Takayama was an overnight excursion for me, but this hotel, coupled with a delightful little town covered in snow, then a soak in the onsen, was a high point of my japan trip.
It is an interesting experience, in between a traditional ryokan and a modern tower hotel. Would definitely recommend if you want something more special than 'just a hotel' or something simpler than a full blown traditional ryokan.
The public baths are amazing! The view from the outdoor bath at the top of the tower, over the city, is amazing.
The breakfast was great, you could easily choose to have a Japanese style breakfast or a Western style breakfast (or why not some combination of the two.)
Excellent location in Takayama just on the edge of the old town area and about 15 minutes walk from train station. Spacious rooms, with basic interiors. The beds are mattresses on a raised tatami floor which gives it a nice Japanese feel. The common lounge area near reception is great, with free drinks including beer, sake and a range of teas. Didn't try the onsen. A fairly simple hotel which is nicely designed to suit its surroundings, with a Japanese vibe and in a great location.
Its far from the iconic Sanmachisori area and the beautiful 東山遊歩道. The hotel features public onsen bath, which is great.
The dinner was the best meal I had since I visited Japan this time. It was so delicious and beautifully presented.
The staff were also excellent. They were all extremely polite and friendly.
I would definitely come back when I visit Takayama again.
First time in a Ryokan so it was a very interesting and pleasant experience. Sleeping on futons was fine and the clothing provided to wear throughout the hotel - and in the street if you wanted to - added to the sense of the place. Not surprisingly the aura of the hotel was very different from the other hotels around Japan where we had stayed.
