The room was tiny for 3 people, but we only stayed 1 night so it was ok. With more nights and more luggage (we only had medium-sized backpacks) it would have been tricky to move around.
I loved the common area of the hotel and the breakfast was great: typical Japanese. It was not super touristy, we were the only Europeans staying at that time, I think. The staff was helpful and welcoming.
We enjoyed the window view, though narrow.
The location is great, quiet, off the main road, but 5 minutes away from the station.

It has been on my wish list, and we were there at the perfect time: Matsuri and cherry blossoms!!
I liked that it was not a big city. Hikes in the mountains/hills would have been nice, and the Hida Village was a special feature.

Takayama was my favourite destination in Japan - it is beautiful, a little calmer than some of the other tourist attraction cities and there was lots to see and do. I wish I had stayed longer. The espresso from the riverside market was the best coffee I had in Japan!

We highly recommend a visit.
We highly recommend a visit. The city is beautiful and provides a respite from the larger cities. The sound of the river seems to permeate the city. The flowering of cherry trees is magnificent during theSpring Festival. Some beautiful shrines and Edo period buildings, including a museum that provides an opportunity to walk through the living quarters and government administrative buildings and identifies the day to day functioning of a local government officials.
There is a wonderful, ‘tiny’ bar near the Retro Museum that is a place to hang out and meet other travelers and converse with the owner. His creative cocktails are really delicious. Loved the outside and upstairs seating as well.
This city knows how to welcome its guests with benches and a customer friendly attitude. Wonderful experience.
We had chosen the room with private onsen with breakfast and dinner included.
We were shown to our room by an Obasan (As our room was deep inside the ryokan towards the end!), and she explained everything about our room and the facilities available! Modern amenities with the rustic traditional ryokan, love it.
We had an allocated private space to dine in at the restaurant, and the set course meal was really enjoyable!
As we spoke little to none Japanese, the staff were thoroughly helpful and tried their best in explaining.
Like:
- good price point, especially when all other budget options near Station were fully booked (weekend)
- very clean, quiet, warm (good working aircon)
- onsen water baths with high ceiling and white bathroom tiling-bath stools etc, no smells, no mold sighted, very well-maintained, separate for men & women
- common wash basins, washrooms clean
- flexibility with room change upon check-in
- helpful English-Japanese speaking staff
one of our favourite stays during our month in Japan with a family of 5.
Everyone had a real and comfortable bed (often we have to share with a kid or someone sleeps on a sofa), it was light and clean.
Nice bathroom and I love having a washing machine in the room.
Close to the station and the old town was 10-15 minutes walk from were we stayed.
I recommend visiting the onsen at the neighbouring hotel Takayama Green Hotel.
This was our only Ryokan stay, so I'm not really qualified to say, but I think it was a lovely place and certainly felt like a traditional Japanese experience. We appreciated the free shuttle from/to the bus/train at no cost and it was such a quick and lovely walk to everything in Takayama - what a fantastic little town! The staff were so kind, the Ryokan is so cute and we enjoyed the onsen.
Beautifully designed place, more hostel than hotel. I enjoyed the mixture of modernity and traditional Japanese style, the thoughtful use of wood throughout the place. Comfortable mattresses and soft linen. When the lounge is not too busy, nice place to hang out or even make some food. Great location, everything in Takayama is easily accessible by foot anyways.
Staff is very friendly, breakfast is really good and the private onsen was an absolute highlight so far on our japan trip. It’s just perfect. Room was spacious enough for the two of us and the hotel is located about a 15 minute walk from the main sights in Takayama.
Hotel is very easy to find as well, google maps directions are perfectly fine and accurate.
Beautiful, luxurious ryokan with good food and extremely friendly staff. We felt very well taken care of. The ryokan is a bit outside the centre of Takayama, but with the shuttle bus that is no problem at all. We loved our room with our own onsen tub on the balcony - it was quite special soaking there at night, looking out into the Japanese Alps.
First time in a Ryokan so it was a very interesting and pleasant experience. Sleeping on futons was fine and the clothing provided to wear throughout the hotel - and in the street if you wanted to - added to the sense of the place. Not surprisingly the aura of the hotel was very different from the other hotels around Japan where we had stayed.
The property is incredible! my boyfriend and I were traveling around Japan for two weeks, and this Ryokan was the biggest highlight of our trip. The building is beautiful, the rooms are traditional and gorgeous, the Onsen is relaxing and magical, the meals were delicious and varied, it’s just all-around a once in a lifetime experience.
Within comfortable walking distance to the bus station, the old town, and Hida Folk Village. The indoor and outdoor onsen were superb! Excellent breakfast, too, of traditional Japanese food, plus very good pastries. We would love to go back to Takayama and we would certainly book this hotel again.
Small, good room which was good for the overnight stay. Hotel graciously allowed me to check in slightly early, which was much appreciated after busy first half day of travelling, and also allowed me to spend more time exploring Takayama. Hotel had a happy hour, which was good.
Almost everything, but number one would be the staff. They are AMAZING and the food is second to none. This was the number one highlight of our visit in Japan. If you ever wanted to experience a ryokan or get a true Japanese experience, stay here you won't regret it
Beautiful modern hotel close to Takayama station. Onsen on 9th floor is a highlight of the stay. Stylish comfortable rooms with big windows. Staff is friendly and efficient. We really enjoyed our stay. Thank you Mercure!
Photos in Booking.com are accurate.
Great location and facilities, Takayama station and Takayama old street are just minutes walk away. The hotel is also very nicely decorated. Requested to change my dates and they were able to accommodate that. Friendly staff.
Beautiful surroundings, complete rest while being in the Ryokan. Good bus connection of 1.5 hours from Takayama, given the distant location. Very nice staff, absolute great food and plenty Onsen options private or public.
The location was the best. Many food choices around or near the hotel and it is near Takayama station and Nohi Bus Station. Comfortable and good for a large family. They are very considerate also to our request.
Fantastic location by the river. Close to historic sections of Takayama.
Lovely, traditional old ryokan. Nice Japanese breakfast (western also available).
We loved our room overlooking the river.
Return guest, this place is our favourite ryokan in the Hirayu-Takayama area with an onsen in the room. The place caters for the clients desires, and the service is exceptional.
Excellent stay in Takayama in Ryokan style. Everything is good from staff greeting, check in, facilities until check out. Will definitely come back again next time.
