Due to booking.com misinformation we were originally booked into the lodges which although well equipped inside, outside are like portacabins and we had men working directly outside our window with a gate flapping. There were no rooms in the main hotel so the lady on reception (the most pleasant person there) when I complained offered to let us have the honeymoon suite, these rooms were like night and day. Beautifully appointed bathroom with a slipper bath and stand alone shower and the bedroom was all mirrored furniture.
Breakfast was a bit hit and miss as the first morning it was fine as we had a full Scottish , on day two they had a christening booked and we were most definitely rushed. Poached egg on toast was exactly that one poached egg on a slice of toast, the yoghurt, fruit and cereal cart were whisked away so no chance of anything there.
Day three a more leisurely affair, we had it down pat and asked for everything exactly as we wanted it - two poached eggs, two slice of toast, extra toast for the jam etc.
Gretna is short on sit in restaurants so we had dinner in the restaurant the first night asking for the bar menu as that’s where we were. It was the same menu as we would have had in the restaurant proper no discount for sitting in the bar area. There was no television or music there, no ambience.

It was a lovely breakfast & room. We were at a loss as our van got flooded in Carlisle castle carpark. So was so lovely for the hotel to put us up for the night. They were very kind. Thank you.
The staff were wonderful. The room was large, clean and tidy. The full English breakfast was very good. The bar area had a relaxed ambience to it. Close to Carlisle Castle and Cathedral. Walking distance to shops (Asda, Pound shop etc), eateries (pub and, fish & chips) and car wash.
Great location close to the station and Carlisle castle

What guests said about Carlisle Castle:
Carlisle Castle is intact with excellent displays about the part it played in the Scottish border wars, but the Army still uses part of the grounds and some areas are off-limits
Carlisle Castle is intact with excellent displays about the part it played in the Scottish border wars, but the Army still uses part of the grounds and some areas are off-limits. Nearby Brougham Castle is an evocative ruin, but you are able to climb most of the way up the tower and the interpretative info is fascinating.
