It is a very quiet place.
It is a very quiet place. During the week days there is nothing to do but going to restaurants. There are many of stray dogs and cats, they are homeless and have no food. Some of them were very sick and injured. Nobody cares. The food is very poor and there isn't many choices.

I planned to visit the Lençóis Maranhenses National Park at the middle of the traditional São João Festival, so the city had an amazing atmosphere and there were cultural events all over the old town.
I definitely recommend to visit the Museu do Raggae, Museu da Gastronomia e Casa Museu Tambor de Crioula.
Where to eat? Cafofinho da Tia Dica is a must.

Old historic centre was easy to walk around and the buildings are fabulous. The Palace do Leose - state government official premises has free tours of selected rooms. Beautiful and worth a visit. There was a fiesta on while we were there so much fun, dancing street food etc. Live music options great. Museums good.

I like the city very much.
I like the city very much. The hot and windy climate by the sea is very pleasant. The old town looks and feels great. Food usually is spicy and may give you heartburn if you indulge too much. People are warm and welcoming. What I don't personally like that the beaches are almost all improper for swimming due to water polution. Also the lack of touristic infrastructure and the poor quality of information available mean you need to ask a lot to get around and people generally don't speak English.

I spent the day here before heading to Lençois Maranhenses. The old town is definitely worth a visit. It is small and only requires 3 to 5 hours. Late afternoon is the best time to visit in terms of lighting (for the best photographs). Also, that is when the the churches open.
My partner and I adored the French / Portuguese architecture of São Luis, with the decaying buildings adding to the character of the city. Casa Frankie is a beautifully restored building that is charming and comfortable for it's guests to stay. Staff member Gerinho (excuse the spelling!) and owner Frank were both very helpful and provided us with exemplary hospitality. The swimming pool and the amazing coffee were a real treat for a couple of long term travellers!
Hardly ever you meet so genuinely friendly staff as in this hotel!
