The Crown at Wells, Somerset, hotel in West Pennard

This former 15th-century coaching inn offers en-suite accommodation with limited parking for small cars on site.

Awesome historical building; clean & comfy; excellent location; tasty food; and especially the smaller treats such as a warm bathroom towel rail and walking into the room being welcomed by the lamps having already been switched on. Makes one feel so at home!

The Ancient Gatehouse & Rugantino Restaurant, hotel in West Pennard

Set in a stunning location on Wells Cathedral Green, facing the West Front, The Ancient Gatehouse & Rugantino Restaurant is well positioned for discovering Somerset's historic beauty spots.

We stayed in room 2, which has a four-poster bed. There is a large window onto Sadler St with a window seat underneath. A great place to watch the world go by or to sit and read. The on-suite bathroom was clean and the shower powerful and effective. although the shower could do with a place to put toiletries. The bed was comfortable and the bed linen was good quality. Bottled water, tea and coffee making facilities were replenished everyday. The Old Gatehouse is right on the cathedral square with access through the breakfast area of the dinning room. There is seating outside on a grass area overlooking the square but the seating and tables are removed into storage on evenings when the restaurant is not open (Tuesday and Wednesday). We arrived on a Monday so booked for the restaurant Rugantino that night. We loved it, the ambience, the service and the food, just brilliant! We tried other top rated trip advisor restaurants on the Tuesday and Wednesday and they don't even come close.

Bed and pillows were comfy. Bathroom was spacious, almost too big as it was half the size of the room! Wished the room was bigger..

The room was very clean indeed the window was at the back of the property which was great because it was very quiet in the room. It’s a shame there was no breakfast.

The building is a very old inn. There are signs of upgrading. There were 9 rooms 2 on ground floor, fully refurbished, and a further 7 on a higher floor acces by means of stairs. There is plently of parking spaces although this gets full at meal times as the inn (pub) seems very popular for food.

The pub itself and the location were fantastic. The food was excellent - we had dinner in the evening and breakfast the next morning - the full English was one of the best I've had! Staff were polite and friendly and all in all, a great stay.

Loved the inn - you could see it was old by many of the features - not just tarted up. The staff were really friendly and the food (dinner and breakfast) were excellent. Our room was nice and quiet, despite being near the road and our bathroom was exceptional.
