Surrounded by beautiful scenery but just a few minutes' walk from Hay-On-Wye's centre, this charming inn has a traditional wooden-beamed bar. Dating back hundreds of years, Oliver Cromwell is rumoured to have stayed in the 17th century.

We loved the themed décor with every nook and cranny filled with interesting items. So much wood! There was parking in the lot, an elevator, a spring fed hot tub. There was a pool in the adjoining hotel for our use, but we stuck with the hot tub. Dinner (additional cost) was great with themed food available and roving singers. Breakfast (included) was served in a lovely room and was plentiful even though we are gluten free.

The evening meals and the breakfast were very good, all the food was of a good quality and cooked well. The room was very clean and the bed comfortable. As the weather was cold in the evening the owner put the heating on for us.

We really enjoyed our stay in this hotel. It is in a great location for Hay-onWye town centre, the book festival as well as great views over the countryside. We could see that the team there were working hard to make an enjoyable stay for their guests. Excellent dinner and breakfast menu selection. Very comfy rooms, full of character, but do remember to pay attention to the "Mind Your Head" signs!!

The room was comfortable and warm - just what we needed as unseasonably cold outside. We had dinner and enjoyed it all. Lovely.

The staff were very friendly and helpful - nothing too much trouble. I only had dinner one night, but it was very good. The double room and bathroom was spacious, comfortable and clean. The location for the town centre is excellent and as there was parking on site, I was able to just leave my care there for my whole visit to the town.

The Old Black Lion was such a lovely place to stay in. The staff are so friendly and helpful. James even went out of his way to help my partner send a gift to my room while I was staying there alone! And the food is to die for! Dinner was startlingly good, and breakfast was so hearty and lovely. I will definitely stay here again.

Old atmospheric historic inn just over the Welsh border coming from England. Very good menu. Comfortable room. Good parking. If using an English bus pass on the 38A bus from Hereford, best get off and on and off at Cusop, just outside Hay-on Wye, walking distance to the Black Lion. An English bus pass is not valid in Wales & vice versa

The staff was excellent - from the email when we booked suggesting we book our dinner as well since they usually are fully booked, to the woman who checked us in and got us settled, to the host who took care of us the next day - everyone was so friendly and knowledgeable. The historic inn is beautiful and charming, our room was great, and the food was fabulous!

Room was charming and rustic inline with the age of the building, with fantastic views of the surrounding area. The dine in dinner was to die for and the puddings exceptional, making you wanting more. Staff were very friendly and made you feel at home and comfortable with ease. An exceptional Inn and restaurant, to be booked time and time again.
