The Mansion on the Mile B&B, situated in the Tate Mansion, is a rare gem in the Indianapolis Mile Square, as it is one of the few original homes still standing. The mansion boasts a brick front portion, which was added in 1890, and a wooden two-story structure (the home from next door) at the back, which was built in the early 1840s. The first floor of the Tate Mansion features 13ft ceilings, while the second floor has 12ft ceilings, and the third floor has standard 8ft ceilings. The woodwork is predominantly natural Hemlock, with the main staircase imported from Germany and made of oak. The mansion has six slate fireplaces, which once served as the primary source of heat for the home. The Victorian-period lithographed slate fireplaces are examples of ornate fireplaces and are quite rare. The mansion is a stunning example of Neo-Jacobean architecture, which is a blend of German Romanesque and English Tudor styles. The Tate Mansion is also featured in the Encyclopedia of Indianapolis as an early example of a mansion. The mansion boasts twenty-five original stained glass and leaded crystal windows that add to its charm and appeal. Warren and Helen, who once lived like royalty in their respective rooms, have now made way for the Warren and Helen guest suites. During your stay, expect to be treated like royalty and pampered in true style.
Tom and Jeanne are amazing people who have been working tirelessly for the past 25 years to restore the beautiful Tate Mansion in downtown Indianapolis. Originally planning to open it up as a bed and breakfast, their plans changed when they decided to adopt a sibling group of nine brothers and sisters, all from the same mother. With these new additions to their family, Tom & Jeanne had 15 children to care for, which understandably put a pause on their B&B plans. Despite the challenges, and now being empty nesters, they find joy in welcoming guests into their home and are dedicated to being the best caretakers of the mansion, always striving to leave it in better condition than when they first acquired it.
Manson on The Mile, a charming B&B, is nestled in the heart of downtown Indianapolis and spreads across two squares, making it an ideal location for tourists who want to explore the city on foot. The neighborhood is a bustling hub of activity and is situated near the Mass Ave District, which is renowned for its numerous restaurants and bars, making it an exciting destination for foodies and nightlife enthusiasts. Interestingly, Indianapolis was initially designed to be a square mile in size, but it has since grown into a sprawling metropolis. Despite its expansion, the mansion has managed to retain its historic charm and is one of the few remaining homes in Indianapolis's Mile Square area that still serves as a residence. Moreover, the mansion is located at the southwest corner of the original residential district that was planned for Indianapolis, which adds to its historical significance. The Lockerbie Square, a highly respected preservation district in the United States, is also nearby, making it a must-visit destination for history buffs and architecture enthusiasts.
