Company information

Innkeepers Jeff and Sandra Shaffer share a love for historic homes, food, wine and travel. Both will tell you that guests are the best part of running an inn. Meeting new people and creating a memorable guest experience for each visitor is what Sandra and Jeff are all about. Being able to do it in a historic inn located in the spectacular Shenandoah Valley, with amazing beauty in ALL directions, is like a piece of Heaven – what a wonderful place to call home! They invite you; welcome you and most importantly look forward to serving you. Stay as little or as long as you like and hopefully you’ll be back again! After all, it’s about you!

Property information

First built in 1780 and expanded in 1853 to its current size, the Hummingbird Inn has five guest rooms, a cabin on the creek and plenty of common space to host celebrations, family or friend gatherings, reunions and weddings. In addition to welcoming you to the authentically-restored architecture of the Inn, sharing its history and the excitement of passing trains, and guiding you through abundant nearby recreational opportunities, Innkeepers Sandra and Jeff prepare seasonal, farm-fresh local fare for your complimentary two-course country breakfast, for special-order picnics to go or antipasto dinner and dessert platters. Whether you’re looking for a romantic setting, comforting country hospitality, or easy access to the amenities of the scenic Shenandoah Valley, this historic Bed and Breakfast's elegant, relaxed atmosphere is ideal. From the Inn’s convenient location in the quaint, rural town of Goshen, visitors can explore the natural wonders of Goshen Pass, Natural Bridge, Warm Springs / Hot Springs and experience cultural offerings of Lexington, Clifton Forge, Staunton, then “come home” to a warm, beautifully-appointed private retreat or great place to be with family & friends!

Neighbourhood information

Hummingbird Inn is 5 minutes from Goshen Pass, Virginia's oldest state managed natural area with beautiful trails, trout fishing, kayaking and swimming. Our little Town of Goshen is a sleepy mountain village of 360 people in the George Washington National Forest. We are proud of our natural spring water, fireflies and abundant star gazing. Goshen was a hopping railroad town back in the day and our Inn is steeped in Railroad history. Trains pass in front of the Inn today adding nostalgia and romantic charm to your stay. Train traffic is not often nor do they stop in Goshen...but you are likely to experience a train during your stay and, yes, they can pass through the night. Goshen has a gas station, convenience store, one restaurant which serves country food, a wonderful library and a historic 1890 Truss Bridge, all in walking distance from the Inn. Our property is on Mill Creek, a lovely trout and bass stream that can be heard from the verandas or open windows, especially in spring from the winter thaw or summer and fall rains. It even runs good during winter. A deck is built on the creek beside our historic barn (Goshen's former livery), a perfect spot to enjoy a bottle of wine!
